Angry Damaged Paint on new WRX

went to pick up my new WRX from the dealer, and the passenger side paint had stone chips from the front fender to the rear quarter panel. There were about 6 stone chips, you can see down to the bare metal. The salesman wants to use touch up paint to fix it. I really don't want this car, since it is damaged. They believed it happened on transit on the train, on its way here.

The paint looks thin with no base at all. Is the paint on the WRX that fragile?

I'm a little concern to buy a WRX if the paint gets damaged so easily.

Mauricio

The paint on the WRX is generally pretty resiliant, but you don't know what caused the chips...

Either way, you have the right to refuse to accept the car as it is in an unacceptable condition for a new car, you certainly have the right to refuse to accept a car with paint chips touched up like that.

Good job you know the chips are there, now insist on another vehicle which doesn't have any paint damage!

You bought a new car, that includes the paint job, a paint job that has been touched up is not new in my opinion so you needn't accept the car.

Here is an update:

I went to the Subaru dealership; they retouched the car with touch up paint. The touch up is noticeable; I won’t buy the damaged car.

The Salesman was not pleased with my decision not to buy the damaged car, and I asked him if he could order a new for me. He told me he could not afford to order a new one, since he will be stacked with the damaged one, so I asked him to refund my deposit.

After a little conversation, discussing both sides of the story. He tries to come out clean with no blame, but to blame it on me or whoever or whatever did the damage to the car. Then The Sales manager jumps into the conversation, and tells me that he will order a new one for me; At this point I’m really pissed the way we are being treated. The Sales Manager asked me to think it over the weekend, and tell him on Monday, what’s my decision. We agreed that I’ll talk with other WRX’s owners here in the peg, and asked them if they have noticed any issues with the paint.

At this time I’m asking everyone out there, for your honest suggestion. Should I buy this car?

I’ll be honest with you, I’m a picky guy, I notice every dent or stone chip on my current car, and I try to fix them ASAP. If I’m going to invest lots of money on a car that it’s going to make a picky guy like me, miserable, I would not prefer to buy it.

What can you WRX owners tell me now?

Once again thanks for your advice.

One last thing, you don’t know, how much I’ve dreamed having on these cars, too bad this incident happened.

You should not take delivery of a car you already know you won't be happy with, especially when you know what faults there are with the car.

Seriously, you are not obliged to accept the vehicle.

If they want your business, they WILL get another vehicle for you that will satisfy your requirements, they're spinning you a line of BS to try to get to drive a damaged car off the lot.

I love Subaru's and especially WRX's but I wouldn't pay for a new car which already has paint touch ups on it.

If he is seriously intent on selling the car, and you really want it, tell him to get the paint fixed properly for one, and tell him to make it worth your while to take it($$$'s off).

Regardless, I don't think you should take delivery of the car in its current state.

yea really listen to Freakray.

The original WRX i was gonna buy had the same problem or something. But just keep arguing. either get a new car or get a lower the price for the WRX.

If u dont buy it its their loss. and plus theres other dealers out there.

I spoke with some local owners and took a look at their cars. They had some stone chips, that looked awful, you can see down to the sheet metal. Their paint jobs were thin as well.

I went to the dealership, and told them, that I won’t buy another WRX for now, until this issue gets fixed (with better paint jobs). I got my deposit back.

Thanks for your help. Your comments saved me from making a mistake I would’ve regretted for the rest of my life.

I’ll look into my other options (Lancers or RSXs).

personaly i would have bought the WRX BUT demaned that they give it a REAL paint job. or discount it enough to go and get a real paint job done. my impreza has the original paint on it and i treat it like shit for now. i take it extreme off roading(bushes dont stop me i plow the fuckers out of my way) and there are hardly any scratches on my paint let alone any chips.

Same paint crap

Hey! I just got my 2004 Rex.....Same crap happened. Except this time it
looks like someone scratched it and used touch up paint on it already!
I reccomend washing your cars ASAP after you get them, because when
I did, I think I removed some special clear coat they used to make it look like the scratches weren't there! Oh, but they were there! I got to
go to Pheonix today to get it repaired...or get a new one...SOMETHING
has to be done.

Yeah me too,

I took mine through a corn field like 2 weeks ago... I have only one issue with my paint, and that is a small area the size of a dime where some fucker in a parking lot hit my back drivers door with a shopping cart..

I agree, I would ask for a sizible discount, or walk....

I drove 6 hours away to a dealer that dealed with me... he took alittle more than 4K off the sticker price for a new car... with 33 miles.

When i was ready to buy I e-mailed every subaru dealership in a 10 hour drive radius.. I told them what i wanted and asked for them to give me a quote...

At this point you can also consider getting a pre-owned WRX, unless you really want the '04

Hey Guys:

Thanks for your comments, but I'm getting a RSX type S, I did not want to deal with my local Subaru dealership (we only have one). If I had a hard time with the sales dept, I can't picture how the service will be. I talked with some local owners, and they do not have anything good to say about their service. They void you warranty for anything minor, unless if you get it done with them, or making up stories about faulty components.

Thanks Mauricio

I'm in Winnipeg, the RX8 is nice, but with the WRX I was on the limit of my budget, if I go with the RX8 I'll have to eat Water and Bread to survive. The type S is more convenient for my budget, that's why I'm going with the Type S.

I need to blend performance and luxury, if I was all performance; I will buy a 97 RX7 Twin Turbo.
