Red face air conditioner

the airconditioner in my 93 s-10 blazer isn't cooling like it should. when I turn it on it is really cold for about 5 minutes, but then it blows what feels like vent air. My mechanic recently recharged the system(april 2003). I took it back to him last week to check the freon levels, and he said it was fully charged. he suggested that it was freezing over and that was why it will blow warm air after awhile. Any suggestion on how to solve this problem? I sometimes turn it off for a few minutes and then it is cold again, in the meantime I'm sweating bullets.

open the hood and start the vehicle. after it starts blowing warm air, check to see if the compressor is cycling or not. you'll be able to tell if it is, as the clutch makes a noise when it engages.

if it is not cycling, look to the left and you will see the accumulator (aluminum cylinder), mounted on this will be a pressure switch. disconnect this switch and use a piece of wire or paper clip and jump the two terminals in the wire harness. if your compressor cycles then you probably need to replace this switch. it unscrews from the accumulator, and where it unscrews from should be schrader valved, at least it was on my 95 s-10.

i had that same problem on my s-10, it would work for a while and then quit. the pressure switch fixed it.

remember though, all this is assuming that your system is properly charged. if it is overcharged, it could be freezing up. however if it has been hooked up to gauges and everything reads fine pressure wise, then id say its most likely the pressuere switch.

if you still have the stock fan - you might want to check the fan clutch as well ....

a faulty fan clutch will have no effect on his problem. 5 min would never be long enough to heat up enough to engage the fan clutch anyway.
