What would be a good engine swap for my 90 4 cyl?

its actually a friend of mine's cavi but i do a little tuning on it. He races it on a 3/8 mile dirt track but lately the engine has been sputtering.
I'm looking into what engines will fit and or what cranks or heads fit on which engines. It has to be a four cylinder. Any help is appreciated i haven't spent alot of time around 4 cyls.
