Wiring Diagram 1977 Jeep CJ5

I just acquired a 1977 Jeep CJ-5 304 5 Liter. The last person to own it was very very uncareing towards it. The whole wiring harness is screwed up big time and I was wondering if anyone had any information that could be helpfully in me reconstructing this wonderfull machine? Thank you for your comments.

Well I hate Chilton for one I have there books and I dont know it doesnt seem to match what is in the Jeep at all so I dont care to follow that one but if there is a site or blue prints from the orginal jeep Wiring diagram that you know of I would appericate that.

P.S. My Jeep is Red not black bud but good luck on finding yours.

wcllg,

Haynes offers a manual which has decent wiring diagrams as well. The manuals are inexpensive and available at Auto Zone stores for under $15

Wiring Diagram

I am right in the middle of a wiring project on my 73 cj5. I have both the Chiltons and Haynes books. The Haynes does have a good wiring diagram. I photocopied the diagram and then used my daughters colored pencils to trace every wire with the correct color. I then made notations beside each wire on the diagram showing wire gauge. Now I can follow the diagram much easier. Thats my two cents worth.

Hey, sounds like we are in the same boat...I just bought a 1979 CJ5 and I got wires hanging out all over the place...I just now started looking at the wires so I have not actually tried to clean them up yet...Anyways, I got the Hanes maual and it just plain sucks...If you are interested I got a number for a guy that actually sells a reprint shop manual (complete manual that was put out by Jeep that would be used by actual repair shops) for the 1979 Jeep...I have not ordered one yet but I will in a couple of days, he sells them for $75...Let me know if you want that number...By the way have you started cleaning up your wiring yet? if so, how is it going?

Re: Wiring Diagram 1977 Jeep CJ5

I appreciate the tip on the manual. I think I'll hold off on ordering one for now... The Jeep project took a long hiatus. I worked on it here and there but have not had alot of time to devote to it lately. As I stated on my last entry, I was replacing each wire one at a time. I finaly said to heck with it and bought a complete new wiring harness by Painless. It set me back about $310.00 bucks but now I have everything I need instead of piecing everything together from scratch. It came with all the connectors, hardware and a new fuse box that I really needed. I now have everything I need to re-wire the jeep from bumber to bumber. The harness is still in the box. I decided to jump back into the project with both feet. I gutted the jeep completely and should have the tub off this week end. I need to weld new floor panels in due to a bad rust problem. Once the tub is off I will clean up the frame and re-coat it. I have already re-built the brakes all the way around complete with new slaves and master. I also installed a new gas tank. My intent is not to have a show rig by any means. I just want a rig I can use for hunting and goofing around with out on the logging roads. I have had this CJ for dang near 15 years. With the way my schedule has been I expect it will take me about six more months to finish the job. Best of luck with your "79". Keep me posted on the progress of your CJ. It helps keep me motivated to hear about other people's Jeep projects. Shoot me an email if you want to bounce any questions or suggestions back and forth.
