Lifting a 92 explorer.....

I have a 92 explorer and am thinking about lifting it maybe 6" with 33's. Now there are not a lot of lifted explorers out there and im thinking hmmm either its gay or this could be a bad idea. I know of only one kid in my town that has a lifted explorer and his wheels like a champ so im undedided on my decision. i've looked into what i'd have to modify and it looks like a hassle... any ideas on my dilemma?

i also have a 92...mine is an Eddie Bauer and i thought about a lift too...

It kinda depends on you. There are lots more than two different kinds of people in the world, but for this discussion I'm going to limit it to two. First, the ones who see "what's hot" and just HAVE to have one. Then there are those of us who want to do something a little different.....

If you fall into the second category, I would say "go for it!"

I have a '96 5.0l which is even harder to lift than your '92. So far, it has 31X10.50R15 All-Terr T/As, and a custom dual exhaust. A friend of mine is going to help me tear apart a junkyard-set of leaf springs and add 1 to the rear. Then (with a tape measure) I'm going to "crank" 1.5 to 2" of lift into the front torsion bars. Anything more and I'll start wearing out U-joints. The 31's fit now, but I think it will look a LOT better when I'm done.

The main reason (IMHO) you don't see a lot of lifted Explorers out there is that nobody makes kits for them. Of course, then you have to ask "why not?" The reason is that there aren't that many of us who WANT to. Some would argue they aren't a REAL 4X4 (no transfer case), but I disagree. Every once in a while my son or one of his friends (yes, I'm THAT old) calls me up and says "Can you come pull us out?". (My truck is not that much better off-road than their jeeps and pick-ups, but I have a couple of things they don't; Years of experience driving 4WDs in the woods, and the ability to laugh at them when someone says, "I'll bet you can't get up that hill/through that mud hole!")

Sorry! I'm starting to preach! The bottom line here is, you have a truck/SUV that doesn't have a great deal of aftermarket support. That means if you want to make it look nice (and it REALLY can) you have to work a little harder. If that scares you, that's fine. Go find yourself a Wrangler, or a pick-up. However, if you believe in the-harder-I-work-for-it-the-happier-I'm-going-to-be than transform your Explorer into something special. When you do, it will really make you enjoy driving it.

Lifting it will raise the center of gravity even higher, making the risk of a rollover even higher.
