1986 88 ignition problem

I have an 1988 olds delta 88 royal with 3.1 V6 fuel injection.
Recently after car would warm up check engine light would come on. Car would run fine. If you turned of car, it wouldn't start again for at least 30 minutes. Someone told me to change the sensor on the harmonic balance. When I did this the new part didn't work. When I put back the old sensor IT no longer works. Car no longer starts at all. No fire on any plug. Car has 3 coils. Is there an ignition module for this car? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I checked diagnostic code and it show normal. 12 flashed 3 times followed by 12 3 times. Do the codes detect a bad ignition module?

It may be disribuatorless ignition, change that. (the module that the plug wires connect to)

I think that engine is a 3.8l instead of a 3.1l You changed the crank sensor. What you need to change is the cam sensor. That will cause the car not to start when shut down. There may other problems, but I'd change the cam sensor first.
Did the car stall on you when driving?
I'd like to know if it is a 3.8l or 3800. Let me know.

You are correct it is a 3.8l. I made a big mistake there

The car never stalled at all. It ran perfectly. But it would not start again after you turned engine off. Not until the car cooled down. About 30+ minutes.
When it first started, it would take about 10 miles before check engine light came on, this got worse until it was about 2 miles.
I was hoping it was something other than ignition module. $$$$

the crank sensor is on the harmonic balancer. when they go bad heat usually affects them. usually once they heat up they will not work and the engine will stop running. if the engine never shut down i would say the crank sensor is fine. without that sensor the engine will not fire at all. it will not set a code in the computer. it will just not run. if it is a bad ignition module it will not set a code. it will usually just not run. it is normally intermittent. sometimes it will run, sometimes it will not. there never seems to be any rhyme or reason to it. the ignition module is located under the coil packs. there should be a 7mm bolt holding the wire connector onto the front of it. there are 6 torx screws holding the coil packs down to the top of it, once that is removed there are 3 nuts underneath it. i believe they are 11mm that hold the ignition module down to the bracket. if you can find a good service manual there are troubleshooting charts you can use to pinpoint the problem. hope this helps
