'95 4.6L Mods
Having been away from high-performance for so many years, I am a bit lost when it comes to the later computer-controlled, fuel injected engines. So, what can I do, easily , to get more out of my '95 Grand Marquis? I don't want to get into heavy mods, but I'd like to see 30 or 40 more horsepower if it can be done.
Thanks! |

haha grand marwuis, nice car, my mom has a 92, well if you only want small horse power boosts, that are easy with no major tear down, buy a k&n air filter, maybe a tornato thing, and maybe pullies just to start u off

It's pretty hopeless, man. Unfortunately.
Your best hope without spending a ton of money is something like a N20 in a bag kit. The heads/intake/cam setup on them isn't very aggressive, full exhaust is pretty expensive plus you won't pick up much power. Maybe with underdrive pullies, full exhaust, a performance module, and cold air induction you'd see 30hp. Best bet is to install some 4.10 gears get a shift kit, better torque converter and a performance module, but even then you're talking well over a grand...

I'm going to agree with unit here. I would definitely throw some gears in that baby, at least 3.73's if not 4.10's. Then do some work to the tranny. A good shift kit along with a higher stall torque converter will help you get that dog up to speed a lot easier.

Thanks for the replies...
2V, 4V? Not carbureted, it has Fuel Injection. Or do you mean something else? I don't think I am interested in putting a turbo on it...I was thinking along the lines of an ECM chip change, or maybe cams. Weren't there some 4.6L SOHC Mustangs, or are they all DOHC? Another thought was headers. I am looking for one or two economical and effective modifications...and nitrous is OUT. Maybe an injection system mod...if that would help, but I am thinking it only would work with a cam change. Is any of this stuff available? |

What i meant about 2v or 4v was is it a 2V SOHC or a 4V DOHC? If its a DOHC its relatively the same engine found in the 96+ Cobras. |

I'm pretty sure its a 2V motor. I would seriously consider the whole rear end and tranny upgrade suggest above before you do anything else.

Aaaahhhh, now I get it...four valves per cylinder or two! Stupid me. Anyway, yes, it's SOHC or 2V. I was thinking there may be some Mustang parts that would work. I know the new Mustangs are DOHC, I've looked at them. Were there any hi-perf SOHC Mustangs in years past? That's where I was thinking I might find a better set of camshafts. A little hotter cams and a set of headers, if I could find them, would probably be all I need, but where to look?? It seems Ford would have camshafts for Crown Vic police cars. I've just had no luck looking.

ok here's what performance mods ive found for the grand marquis. Sean Hyland Motorsports makes numerous parts for the 4.6 v8 in both SOHC and DOHC trim. your best bet for picking up power is to switch to 99+ SOHC PI heads and a Bullit intake manifold from Ford Racing. the new mustangs are NOT DOHC. the mach 1 and the cobra are, but the GT's are still SOHC. another idea would be to get the performance coil packs from MSD. as for headers, i would look at Sean Hyland again, they arent listed on his site, but a friend who bought a motor from him says that he has hooker headers that will fit a grand marquis. another idea would be to get a 4v 4.6 from the mach 1, classis design concepts sells a complete mach 1 motor for $4500. as for the police interceptors, off the factory floor they have an identical motor to the regular crown vics. the police interceptors are actually slower than a stock lx crown vic.
hope this helped any ed |

You might want to check out mods for the F-150. They have come with the 4.6L and I have found a lot of mods for increasing the power. They have a supercharger kit that is relatively easy to install if you were worried about installation.

There is easily 20HP gains in exhaust alone. Look at the factory ratings. They rate the dual exhaust models 10 to 15HP more than the single exhaust models, and the dual exhaust is pitiful. The transmissions are weak. If you start drag racing your car, look to get a Lentech valve body, and looser converter. If you want to stay cheap and leave the transmission alone, start looking for another used tranny for when you toast yours. The 98+ Police Interceptors had identical motors, but better computers, dual exhaust, better converters, altered shift points, better gears. Sport cars get everything with the exception of the computer calibration. PI and Sport cars will spank a standard LX. |

Compression goes up to around 10.2:1 and rwhp is at around 240rwhp. Thats 20rwhp more than what comes on a stock pi stang. I dont know how this compares with the Grand Marquis though but Im assuming itll be the same outcome.
