2001 RAV4 Transfer Case Seal
I see some gear oil seeping just behind the drive shaft. I think it's the transfer case seal. I replaced this seal about 10 years ago. I think the seal should have lasted longer but it is what it is.
I made sure the seal was placed in the same spot as the original seal , (not too far back) and I used some gear oil on the shaft when installing the new seal. Besides an original Toyota seal, what is the best brand? Is there a specific part number to use? Are there any other tips to be aware of when installing the seal to make sure I am doing a first rate job? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance. Re: 2001 RAV4 Transfer Case Seal
Any CR/SKF/NTN seal of the appropriate size will work. Chances are that NTN was the OEM supplier of the seal. The nice thing about the CR/SKF seals is that you can specify a seal with a dual lip, and seal contact areas in a different location from the original. This is really helpful if the shaft or driveshaft yoke has a groove wearing into its surface where the seal was riding originally.

If it were me I'd buy National over Duralast.

Re: 2001 RAV4 Transfer Case Seal
I wound up going to Toyota for the correct extension housing oil seal. It cost $27.72 but I think it will be worth it. I didn't have a lot of luck speaking with the counter people at AutoZone or Advance Auto.
The Toyota part number for the extension housing oil seal is 90311-38090. The outer diameter is 2.30 inches and the inner diameter is 1.43 inches. I hope this information is helpful to someone. Do you know what the correct gear oil for the extension housing should be? I think I used 75/90 GL5 the last time I did this job but I'm not sure. Thanks again!
