Coolant Temp Sensor

Has anyone here ever put in your own coolant temp sensor? My 1992 BMW, 325i won't start; is about ready for the junk yard. Had diagnostic today and I was informed that the coolant temp sensor needed replacement. They want $500.00+ to do it! I looked online and found the part for $28.00. This seems ridiculous to me. I am thinking of towing it home and giving it a try myself. Has anyone tried it? Is it something that can be followed with a BMW instruction repair book? Thanks in advance.

sounds high.
i am having problems with my temp gage going off and on.
trying to fix that myself.
i am looking for a schematic. any info will be appreciated.
on my 85 the 325 the gage is located in the front of the engine
near the radiator hose connection. the sensor is easy. unplug, unscrew and replace. hope your problem is not a broken wire or bad connector as mine seams to be.

Unhappy coolant sensor

Thanks for your reply. Well, the car is now resting in the junk yard. All for a $23.00 part. They wanted $200.00 diagnositc fee, and the $500.00 for the sensor replacement. Since the car is now 11 years old and the repairs are getting ridiculous, I decided to put the $500.00 into a new car. Bought one, but not a BMW.
