Unhappy Racing a Malibu?

Hi,

Last night me and my bro were driving home at about 10:30 and we got to a light.
Next to us were abotu 4 girls in what looked like a Chevy Malibu.
I dont know what year but it looked like a 95-00.
We were both at the light and I had my music bumping.
I wasnt even looking to race, but as the light turned green I take off as I usually do. My exhaust is pretty loud so it makes it seem like im going faster then i think.
well anyways they step on it and im like ok they are not passing me.
I gun it and by the time I got to 2nd gear they flew by me.
And to make matters worse they flash their hazards at me.
So anyways they switch into my lane and I move into their old lane.
Just our luck up ahead came another red light.
So we got to the light again and this time i said ok im flooring it.
So I took off and they took off and once again they flew by me.
Flashed their hazards again.
So anyways i dont know much about Malibus but my friend has got one and it pushes a V6 with 175 hp.
My car is a 90' Civic LX sedan which is lot lighter, 5 speed, intake, exhaust, and im a pretty good driver.
But my engine is only a 4 cyl 1.5 liter engine.
I have already ordered a 1.6 liter SI engine out of a 90' CRX.
If i was to put that engine in will I have a better chance and not get embarassed like that by a malibu? Or are Malibus really pretty quick cars?
I know it was a new one not the older ones.
Thanks

May I suggest a cold air intake, rather than short ram, headers, some form of catback, and then some nitrous . those APC thingamajiggers will slow ya down

sup... i drive a mali and i know it's not quick enough off the get go... i mean i have some mods done but my 0-60 isn't as quick as it should be... but maybe the size difference in the engine just causes a mali to be faster then your car. i need to get my 0-60 timed one of these days and i'll put it up here.. but i'm waiting on a few more mods...

2000 Malibu LS 0-60: 8.9 1/4 Mile: 16.9
1997 Malibu LS 0-60: 8.5 1/4 Mile: 16.5

1996 Civic LX 0-60: 9.4 1/4 Mile: 17.2

Even with your intake and exhaust, you're probably only 9 sec to 60. And are you sure it was a Malibu? I've mistaked Pontiac Grand Prix GTP's for Malibus or Monte Carlos when its dark out. Which is a serious mistake if you try to race.

those damn GTP's i had the pleasure of driving one not to long ago, and i was impressed. anyways, as said above, you probabley runing 9's 0 - 60. wich is not much more than my sunbird, witch can barley beat a 4 door auto cav lol. so, to many people tend to think that intake, exhaust will turn there car into a sporty car. but news flash, MoSt bolt ons dont do alot. intakes ad like 3-8 hp? depending on the car. not that big of a increasement, unless you have a metro.

What kind of muffler do you have on that thing? Keep in mind, most of the "sport" type mufflers on the market for SOHC Hondas will actually slow your acceleration.

Back pressure is really important for a naturally aspirated engine, and a SOHC 1.5 liter engine just does not flow enough through the head to need a high flow intake and exhaust.

The real gains you'll see from that engine are if you port the head, install a better cam, and maybe some stiffer valve springs for higher engine speeds.

The flow restriction on the engine is the head. Think of it this way, you have a 3" pipe connected to a 1/2" pipe, and another 3" pipe on the other end of the 1/2" pipe.

Now it doesn't matter how much you try to increase the flow of the big tubes, the bottleneck of the 1/2" is still going to be what's keeping you from making power. That 1/2" pipe is your cylinder head.

Get the cylinder head flowing better, and you'll make more power.
