Alarm goes off on it's own

The alarm in my Town Car goes off periodically. Ford can not find the problem and says no one else is having this problem. (I find that hard to believe). Independent mechanics have also looked at the car and were unable to find the problem. Well, it can't be duplicated and it happens infrequently, so...
Is anyone familiar with this problem???

I havn't heard of this in Town Car, or 1997... but in other Lincolns there some discussion re: door switches malfunctioning causing intermittant problems with some systems.
The cure was to remove the switches, clean them up, lube with some appropriate spray, re-install. In the Town Car their called "Door Ajar Switches". Also, very important, check the Hood Switch as well, I dont think that one can be cleaned, but check it anyway, it's on the RT top fender apron, under the hood. There are also switches mounted on the lock cylinders, both doors, and the trunk that may be defective under certain conditions...

I'm in a 1996, and my service manual quotes the following for Inputs and Outputs, maybe this will give a clue:

The electronic door lock control system receives signals from:
  • transmission range (TR) sensor
    ignition switch (11572)
    seat occupied switch
    door lock switches (14028)
lighting control module (door ajar output)
    keyless entry keypad (14A626)
    keyless entry remote transmitters (15K601)

The system sends output signals to:
  • keyless entry keypad illumination
    power door lock actuators (218A42)
luggage compartment door lock solenoid (14030)
    horn relay (14N089)
    lighting control module

Components

The system is composed of the following components:
  • lighting control module
alarm indicator lamp in LH indicator panel
    door lock cylinder switch (220A40)
hood anti-theft control bracket and switch (19A434)
luggage compartment door lock cylinder switch
    ignition cylinder tamper switch

The following components already exist in the vehicle and are used in the anti-theft alarm system:
  • front door lock switch (14017)
door open warning lamp switch (14018)
    relay (14N089)
horn relay and bracket (13853) and horns
    low beam headlamps
    rear lamp and park lamp
    starter relay
    driver door module

I have that problem.

The car sits behind my office during the day. Occasionally the horn starts honking as if the alarm was triggered. I can stop it with my key fob. It does shut off after some minutes if I am not around. Averages about once a month.

More recently the horn has started tooting while the car is sitting in my garage at home. This is not the repeated toot like the alarm has triggered. This is just a random toot or honk.

Sometimes I think the car is haunted.

I have talked to the dealer, but it is too intermittent for them to find the problem.

I have this SAME PROBLEM! in my 97 Signature Series. I thought it was neighborhood cats in my driveway. But it happens in my garage at work and just about everywhere. I will follow-up on the contacts to see if lubricating these and/or cleaning them will do the trick. Let's keep this going to see if we can find the culprit...

Thanks for the info.....

I eventually removed the horn relay from the fuse and relay box under the hood. This stopped all horn blowing.

However, last week I donated the car to a charity. Just didn't want to deal with all the crazy problems it was developing.

Should make for a decent tax write off.

Re: Alarm goes off on it's own

I have a new Nissan Maxima and I am having the same problem. The alarm goes off for no reason for a few minutes and then stops and then does it again. Last night it started going off at 3:00 a.m.
The delaer says they tested my electrical system and cannot find anything wrong. My neighbors are ready to shoot me.

alarm system

my 95 town car alarm system has just started going off by itself. i had the dealer disconnect the sensor under the hood and in the trunk but it still sets off by itself. It doesn't matter if the system is set or the doors are unlocked. If i leave it parked for days it runs down the battery. Anyone have any ideas?
