1998 Alarm goes off and shuts off engine

Our remote keyless entry rarely works so I usually unlock the doors with the actual key.
This morning the alarm started going off as I was packing stuff into the passenger side. I am able to turn off the alarm by hitting the red horn on the remote, but everytime I open OR close a door OR start the ignition, the alarm goes off again. Also, when I start the van, the alarm goes off and then the ignition shuts off! I can't drive it! I don't see any reference to this in the manual.

Any one have this problem?

Go to unlock the doors with the key, either door and see if it shuts the thing off. Hitting the red button (which should be the panic button) will only shut the horn off while it's going nuts.

some how your van is not reconizing the key you are using. is it the key that came from the factory ? as the correct key has a chip in it and the ignition switch reads that chip and if it ain't the correct chip then the system goes into theft mode and the pass-key shuts the fuelpump off and it dies. do you have the owners manual? if so it tells you how to progam which mode you want to program. i had my battery out for three days and mine went nuts remote wouldn't work alarm going off when i unlocked the door with the key. reprogam it and if that doesn't straighten it out my only other suggestion is let a dealer check the key and see if some thing is wrong with the chip. good luck

If the alarm goes off it will disable the fuel supply so the van can't be started. You can turn much of the system off with the procedure in the owners manual, you should be able to pick one up on EBay.
