The GTO is the same as the VR4. GTO is the badging used in Japan. Since their is already a famous GTO in the US by another manufacturer, Mitsubishi decided (wisely) not to use it.

The GTO is rated at 280 in Japan and they are understating it. They are the same car and its actual rating is 320hp (94+) which is what it sold under here. But they are virtually the same car. The main difference being the location of the stearing column of course.

Isn't there a limit of some kind on the amount of HP a car can have in Japan? I heard that this was the reason for the Acura NSX's very low HP of 280, and now that you just said that Japan's version of the VR4 is rated at 280 HP, as well makes me wonder about this even more...

Its not that they cannot have more then 280hp its that they have to pay a fine if they do.

I can't imagine that it wouldn't. The Japanese like their speed as much as we do.

A 'fine', or a 'tax'? It's not much different than the luxury tax we pay over here. 10% on anything that is over $30,000, if I understand correctly. So a viper that is normally $80,000 (for the new SRT-10), is $50,000 over the $30,000 limit, which is taxed at 10%, which is $5,000 extra you have to pay. This adds up as the cars get more expensive, obviously. A lambo is almost 90% taxed ($30k of $273k is not taxed), meaning that's an extra almost $30k you have to pay in luxury taxes. Also, gas guzzler tax is another thing. $3,000 for the Viper, if I recall correctly. So, I guess it's not that big of a deal... any ideas on specific number or percentages?
