Unhappy '94 Ford Explorer

I just ran across this website tonight, so please forgive me if this sounds really stupid. I have a '94 Ford Explorer, 4-wd with just over 206,000 miles on it. I didn't purchase it new, but i've had it for awhile now. Anyway, it's being towed right now for the umpteenth time and it's because the transmission keeps going out. It's been in and out of the shop, but they just can't seem to figure out what's going on. It's went through five torque converters and many other parts that they've replaced. I just want to know if this might be a common problem with these Explorers. I have a friend who tells me he thinks it's overheating, because it's like it gets hot and the torque converter goes out and transmission fluid just pours out. Anyway, I don't mean to ramble on. I'm just so frustrated with this thing and I thought someone might have had the same problem.
