my first commision and need adviice

hi, i have made a big impression on the guy who tinted my lexus coz he has been spreading the word about my models to all the boy racers that come in, and things like the subaru owners club that go there. i now have been asked to do my first commission. i am lettin ghim choose the model, it will have custom body kit etc, but i need to work out how to price it.

1: per hour, it has been suggested by the tint man that i charge about £20-30 per hour as they will pay.

2: a single price of around £300 for a piece that is highly modified, and £200 for a standard model.

The rates sound right, I would charge by the hour for modified, and flat rate for straight builds.

i like the idea of a per hour price because i take about 25 hrs or more to create a master piece, lol. hmmmm 25 x 25 = £625, all i need is 4 of them to make a month and i will make what i make now! no more boss, sweet

I always quote a flat rate and £300 upwards sounds right to me for a modified kit and certainly justified IMO considering the amount of time and skill involved. Having said that, every single person who has had a quote has run a mile when i tell them They don't seem to appreciate what's involved.

yeah i was worried about them running off, but they seem quite happy to part with their money, lol.
well i will take them as far as i can, am building a c west skyline to go in the guys shop, damn i need help with all these chasis i have to build, i love doing the bodies but get bored lately building the chasis, aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, ah well 10 kits to go before i can get any more, lol, btw i sneakly bought the amt supra from the fast and the furious, hmmmmm quality is ok, should imagine i get a few requsts for them, lol. gonna take a bit of work to make it look nice, i already opened up the hood vents, gonna lower it too if i get that far in the next 10 yrs, lol

Are you talking pounds or euro. I'm not familiar to foreign money seeing as I only know USD.

i am quoting in pounds sterling, which at about $1.6 to the pound that works out at $40 an hour or $320 for a standard build.
but people will pay, i get £20 an hour for drawing building services, and i work 48 hours a week, so there are the people with the money to spend out there!!!!!!

However you decide to do it, decide on a fixed price and agree to it with your customer beforehand. Charging by the hour is fine, but tell him ahead of time how much it will be. In all of my commisioned works, one thing I have definately learned is not to leave any payment details unresolved before beginning work!

Anything else is an invitation to a nasty dispute, and that's not to be taken lightly for what you're planning to charge.

And getting it in writing may seem awkward, but it's a good practice. Cover your @ss!

I guess there are collectors who don't really get the EXACT thing they wan't so they are willing to pay a lot!

I wouldn't pay that much though. I'd rather build it myself.
