ports?????

How importamnt is it ta have ports in a sub box??
Im runnin 2 12' pioneers. I had em in a box in the back of my camaro. But when i got my new car the box was to big, so i cut off the outside 5 inches on either side. This happened ta be where my ports were.
Now the box is just barely longer than the two subs side by side, So shld i be cuttin some ports into the sides???
Also between songs the subs are kinda just betain on there own not loud but it happens between songs or if the bass isnt up to loud. I cant figure out why there doin it tho.

If it is a bandpass, their is a slight delay in the hit time to the sound coming out of the box. If it was a bandpass ported, you most likely highly just screwed up your box. Some subs cannot handle smaller boxes. The smaller the box the more power it needs to make the same sound. Also, once you take the ports out the sound level goes down again. When you took your ports out, what did you use to seal the sides that you "redid"? You need some sort of sealent, silicon caulk is very useful to seal so it doesn't "leak" bass. There are many things that could have happened. Need more details

gosh ... you can't just take the ports out or make a boxsmaller and expect it to sound the same. Matching a speaker to the box is the most important thing here. You might get lucky and make a sealed box that's a fairly good match for your speakers - but like the last guy said, if it WAS a bandpass, you can just throw it away and start over.
