2000 Ranger problem

My Dad has resently purchased a 2000 Ford Ranger, it was working fine for the first month, then soon after it would stall part way through a drive or the engine would shake violently. My Dad knew something was wrong becuase the truck continued doing this constently. He had brought it to a mechanic that my Dad new, it was his friend. Well, he inspected it and came to the conclusion that my dad used the wrong type of gas and the fuel injectors couldn't handle it. He also says it had caused damage to the engine internals. Well anyways my Dad has been spending loads of cash to fix it because everytime he gets it back, he has to bring it in again because of another malfunction. The latest inspection by the mechanic will also cause my Dad alot of money, he claims that to fix the problem he will have to clean the fuel tank, which will cost my dad another $300.

He had spent $500 on his last repairs and now he has to pay another $300 to clean the tank. I honestly think this ass of a mechanic is a total phony becuase his claims dont make sense to me, how can a change in gas effect the engines internals so much?

Can someone please tell me if this mechanic is total BS, or if they know whats wrong with the truck.

Hey bud I have ran into a problem when somone uses the wrong fuel but in my case the customer used DIESEL fuel in their GASOLINE car!! Go figure.. well he filled it up with diesel and drove the car until he oviously ran into a promblem. The car was smoking like crazy and it ran terrible. Now if your dad put diesel into his truck instead of gasoline then the stroy of wrong fuel would be belivable and the problem would be ovious because diesel smells totally diffrent from gasoline. So cleaning out the fuel tank and servicing the fuel system would be the solution to this problem. But a simple change of grade of gasoline like 91 octane and then using 87 octane would not cause a single problem what so ever and not even running an engine with gasoline diesel mix would cause internal problems. The truck would run crappy and smoke but internal problems not likely. If you could supply more info on the actual symptoms of your dads truck maybe i can help you guys.

Had a similar problem with older model using a gas with a detergent additive in it. It caused the truck to run rough and disel when shutting it off. Change to mid premium and added injector cleaner to the next 4 fill ups and the problem went away.
