Tranny Problem?

Hey Guys,

I have a 91 Civic Si (5spd) and there seems to be somewhat of a grinding sound coming from the Clutch/Tranny..

For example, when I turn the car on in the morning. With the clutch in, it makes that grinding-like sound... almost like a bad bearing I guess. When I push the clutch in (disengage) it stops and you can just hear the motor running fine.

Also, and this is probably related to the above problem. Recently when driving away in 1st gear it's making a grinding/whistling sound... sort of like the sound that reverse makes. My 2nd gear is beginning to make this sound too. AND I can hear it when downshifting in any gear.

Any ideas? I had a new clutch put in a few months ago... but the first sympton was in its early stages even with the old clutch, so I don't think it's a clutch issue..

Sounds like you need a new throw out bearing to me. Just get that replaced when u get ur clutch.

That was what everyone else said when I described the problem with my previous clutch.. the throwout bearing was replaced when the new clutch was put in. Unless it's dead... I find that kind of hard to believe though.

Could these symptoms be a result of anything else? Kinda shitty if I have to go out and spent another crapload of money to have it looked at and likely have the clutch etc.. replaced.

Maybe it's my fault for being dumb enough to get a Dynapak clutch

Nope.. I think the throw bearing is crap. I mean, what else would cause this sound to occur when I let the clutch in/out ? This sucks... I took it to a mechanic and all he could say was "Well there's definitely some sort of sound, but I'm not entirely positive what the cause is. I won't know for sure until we take everything apart and take a look. *Cha Ching*

I'm beginning to think I'll wind up putting a new, better, clutch in. My only worry is me going ahead and doing that and then having the noise come back...

If this is happening when you aren't doing anything, just sitting in park it sounds like loud ass "rice crispies" or a "SHHHHH" noise. Then it stops when you depress the clutch.....its one of your tranny case bearings. Replace it soon, or it will blow up and take everything else with it, including the trans case. This is why I am currently looking for an Si tranny myself. Mine blew just after I left the track, and put a golf-ball sized hole in the top of the tranny case. My car has sat ever since, which is approaching 2 months.

The case bearing could also be causing the other noises/problems too. If your tranny has no grinds, I would recommend you replace the bearings and anything else worn inside there. If your tranny is beat, just get a new one.

Problem_Si, yea that sounds about right. Not sure about the Rice Krispies part, but the "SHHHHH" sound was very evident in the beginning when this problem first appeared. It's gone sorta beyond the SHHH sound now though, it's a lot rougher ... any idea how much it costs to replace this Case Bearing? Assuming there's more than one, I'd probably be better off doing them all should the tranny come off. I don't push my baby hard so I think the tranny is in good shape...

Humm my uncle says that one of my bearings is shot, and needs to be replaced. He is an exmechanic who owned his own shop in Hong kong(heheh cheap know how and labour :P). Im wondering where i can find a list of the bearing sizes for a si tranny.
