Where do you build?

What does your workbench look like? Do you have a permanent space, or do you do it on the dining room table when your wife's not looking? How do you like to organize tools, paints, parts, kits? How do you light it?

So my underground lair is currently undergoing renovation- hobby bench, paint booth, machining bench, brewery, all of it. The brewery is all planned out and well underway- but I haven't figured out what to do with the hobby bench. I have the opportunity to make it into a nice dedicated space- but as I've never built in a nice space, I'm not really sure what it would look like. I would love to see solutions that have worked (and haven't worked) for everyone else.

But even more, it would be a lot of fun to see where other people's creations actually come from! I got the chance earlier this month to drop in to Gio's workspace, and it was awesome. Granted it was a bit hard to fully appreciate as I was still tied up and blindfolded and he wouldn't let me take pictures, but even so I could just tell that it was awesome. (Like the food and the wine and the company).

So, where do you build?

Re: Where do you build?

So, these means we'll see a completed build from you sometime in the near future? Like that 850i or 911 turbo you've been working on?

I bought a $49 IKEA desk and an Elfa rolling drawer unit and build in my dusty garage. Each time I paint, I have to clean and wet down the area. Not the ideal situation right now. Plus, it gets cold in the winter. Then I usually switch to the basement family room for assembly, but no painting. I miss the days when I lived in Miami and had a sheltered balcony where I used to paint without a spec of dusty in my paintwork.

Re: Where do you build?

There is a similar thread I started on another forum like this one.
It's interesting to see other peoples 'man-caves'...
This is my hidey-hole, courtesy of my (much) better half.

Re: Where do you build?

I'm working on a contract in a different country from home at the moment, but I've found a corner of my rented apartment to keep myself busy at weekends...

That is the idea. We will see how it goes.

i sometimes carry my stuff to where my pc is...and believe it not, even in the bathroom. LOL!

Re: Where do you build?

Here's my man cave. I always wanted a L-shape desk and 3 years ago me and my dad made this room especially for the modelling.

Re: Where do you build?

The brewery currently looks like this-

(Pic is crappy, but one of the major projects on the list is to properly wire the basement for electricity and lighting.)

The glass vessels are fermenters (called carboys), and each hold a 5 gallon (about 20 litres) batch. Fall has fallen in the eastern US and it is apple season. This is two batches of cider from a local orchard. I mostly do beer, but cider is cheap and easy to brew- and a fun change of pace.

With this setup I can do 20 gal at a time, and produce 10 gal a week at a sustained pace. I rarely brew this fast- but occasionally for events it's nice to be able to.

The keg at the moment contains a clone of Bass I brewed over the summer. I can tell you that having a keg in my workspace does not really make me more productive....

Re: Where do you build?

I have a desk in our unfinished basement, aka the dungeon. I also use it for soldering, repairing small things, working on guns, etc.

It's a selfmade one. I used a extraction hood for the kitchen and made a box around it. Put the hose outside and use a filter for the extractor. I have no more smell fumes. I still use a paintmask off course cause the zero paints I use are very toxic.
