They are two completely different GM engine families.
The 3.4 is from the notorious 2.8/3.1 Chevy 60-degree series first made in 1979 for the Monza. Pros - It's light, and has solid journals for the rods. Cons - Limited power capability, few performance parts, long-history of oil system problems, and head-to-intake gasket leaks. The 3.8 was first debuted in the Buick Skylark (Monza clone) in 1975 and has powered every thing from Century station-wagons to Park Avenues, to the mighty Grand Nationals! Pros - Far better reliability history, much more aftermarket support for parts. You can go nuts with the 3.8! Cons - Split rod journals, but will safely take 350hp with a stock crank. |
