Williams FW14B

Hello, this is my first post and WIP.

I will be building the 1/12 version of this car, with the nose cone removed. So some modification to the monocoque. I'll start with this.

To exhibit the car with nose cone off, the upper arms need to be screwed in from the front instead of behind, since the mounting piece is attached to the front of the cone in the Tamiya kit.

Step 1 - install the suspension:

Step 2 - unscrew front upper arms mount from nosecone, but keep arms in place. Saw off nosecone:

Step 3 - after measuring and placement of the screens and upper arms, I fabricated and screw new supports. Once in place, superglued, then unscrewed and removed the suspension. Started sanding and building up the front of the monocoque to have just the square hole like the real thing:

Step 4 - Sanding the monocoque & priming. Removed the mounting cubes at the rear of the monocoque sidepods as these will not be needed to attached the engine cover, and are not on the real car. Also sanded off the CF detail molded into the plastic on the MC, as this will be added with decals and I want them super smooth. Sanded the front section (although still a bit rough), and primed so it is ready for general work of drill holes and full sanding/polishing all over.

You need to link to the photo image code, or use the "Insert Image" radio button at the top of the Post window and insert the link to the image. It looks like Flickr has an FAQ on how to get the photo file link.

Re: Williams FW14B

Started the engine.

Top covers were drilled out and in process of replacing with rivets & bolts.

All connectors replaced with MFH pieces. Also started adding PE parts from Acu Stion.

Removed the band which goes over top of this part. Will be added later with thin piece of material. Also change connectors, drilled hole to guide cables, added CF and PE bolts.

Attached. Started adding braided lines.

More lines added. Braided metal inside blue cover for short ones.

That's all for now.

Re: Williams FW14B

Hi John,

Thanks.

I mixed flat brown and gun metal as per the instructions for the transmission.

Could you send me the link for Daniel's FW14B? This car is numerous first times for me so looking for as much help advice and tips as possible.

Re: Williams FW14B

Hello,

Just a short update today.

I started adding PE washers and bolts to the monocoque. These are mounting points on the real car.

I also added the band part over the rear suspension actuators (?)

Step 1 - cut a strip of material into shape and make holes for PE bolt. Paint aluminium.

Step 2 – remove Tamiya black screws and glue PE bolt into place. Before and after below.

Next, I started working on the brakes.

Step 1 – start with a sheet of PE parts.

Step 2 – using kit parts for reference, start construction.
Step 3 – filing. A lot! The large disc on left is comprised of 5 pieces – 2 inner, 2 outer, 1 small raiser on back side. The piece on the right is comprised of 6.

Step 4 – prime, then paint discs in gun metal and a shot of flat clear. Prime then gold for inner section. I’m really happy with the sintered metal look of the discs.

Below image shows 3 discs in various stages of construction.

Acu stion disc versus kit disc. My only criticism of the Acu stion brake parts is that the wheel bolts do not fit through the PE components which make up the discs. Disappointed to say I will be using the kit wheel bolts.

Also started work on the front wing.

I noticed when I put the elf decals on the monocoque that the white is slightly transparent. Maybe the age of the kit decals? Not much of an issue, but I see in some other builds that the white sponsor decal on the front wing doesn’t always perfectly cover the black of the wing.

Therefore I painted the section under the sponsor decal white and the rest of the wing black. Better safe than sorry.
Step 1 – white primer
Step 2 – gloss white x 2 coats, with a 1200 wet sanding between
Step 3 – satin black x 2 coats, with a 1200 wet sanding between
Step 4 – started to do the carbon fibre decal.

Below image shows the 3 stages of the wing. I haven’t started with the decal softener yet, so expect the CF to be a lot smoother shortly.

Since these photos I have polished the monocoque and painted inside matt black. I've also started sidepods and rear brake sub-assemblies. I will post more soon.

That is all for now.

Re: Williams FW14B

Hi all,

Progress has been slow but steady.

Just a small update.

Rear brakes have been fitted. Polished black.

I am glad I painted the front wing white underneath, as the decal split when being applied. Managed to save it, but the red sponsors logo to the right of the photo needs a touch up before gloss.

I built the seat. Matt black, then used the Tamiya material. Very nice to work with. For the metal parts I used the Acu stion pieces.

The side pods have been painted. I wanted matt black to contrast with the gloss of the hub. So a few coats of satin black then 2 x light mist coats of matt clear.

I also started on adding some detail to the hub. The electrical box on the back is standard, but I removed the connectors and replaced with MFH pieces and shrink tube. I also added holding bolts.

The real car has attachment points, so I used some spare PE pieces from the Acu stion materials.

Final photo, the various sub-assemblies dry fitted together in the car floor.

That is all for now.

KC
