Getting the factory preset code for the keyless entry keypad

I recently purchased a 1998 Ford Explorer. I can't find the factory preset code to unlock the vehicle? Where can I look or what can I do??

On earlier models the code in on a label attached to the washer fluid bottle in the back(drivers side) tool compartment behind the jack. I had to use a flashlight and small mirror to read it.

I had the same problem with my 2002 Explorer. The dealer said my only option was to pay them $75 to hook their computer up to my car. I finally got a friend in the business to do this for me (another Ford dealer). I couldn't find any codes under the dash or in the jack/spare tire compartment. I even called Ford. They said each car has a different reset code. Good luck.

: : go to the rear of vehicle, open hatch then on left side looking forward is a removable panel that the jack sits behind, remove panel. get a flashlight look forward to see a white module almost by rear seat, there will be a bunch of numbers and letters look for 5 larger numbers this is your factory code.if batt goes dead it will revert to this code even if you change code per owners manual

Re: Getting the factory preset code for the keyless entry keypad

i had the same problem with my explorer.. previous owner never saw the keypad on her driver's door.. hmm.. i searched for several months.. and finally found it on a small box right above the rear left wheel well in the jack compartment area.. 5 large numbers just as described.. it should be there cuz i own a 1997.. but while i was looking for an answer, i remember seeing on many forums that a lot of explorers (not sure which ones, sorry) have them under the steering column above the pedals.. supposedly, this was only visible if you actually stuck your head next to the pedals and looked up.. try this, it seems to help a lot of other people find their codes.. hope it helps you

Question Re: Getting the factory preset code for the keyless entry keypad

Any suggestions on finding it in a 2004 with the 3rd row seating? Just picked this Explorer up, but haven't been able to find it...at least not yet.

Re: Getting the factory preset code for the keyless entry keypad

2002 Ford Explorer keypad unlock code is on the keyless remote module.

MODULE is located behind the RR (pass side) quarter trim inside the vehicle.

I know that Ford changed the modules to front and rear body modules, then they have to be read by only the dealer. (In case of 2003 Windstar van)

Re: Getting the factory preset code for the keyless entry keypad

Keyless entry code on 1997-2001 Explorers is located on the electronic module mounted over the driver side rear fender well. Open the cover on the trim panel (where the jack is located). Look toward front and you will see the wiring and module. The code is on the label on the side of the module facing toward the passenger side where you can't see it. If you have a small mirror, you can insert it between the module and trim panel to read the numbers - they are very large so no problem in finding them. If you can't read them with a mirror, you will have to remove the trim panel. 5 numbers and probably starts with a 1 or a 9.

Re: Getting the factory preset code for the keyless entry keypad

Did you try posting in the Windstar forum? If you'd like me to move this post to the Windstar forum for you, let me know.

For what it's worth, it sounds like the module is located above the glove box. The code is probably on a sticker affixed to the module.
