Zoom - Zoom! AutoExe MX-5 Progress! (Painted Finally)

I started this kit 2 days after completing my Greddy RX-7. The body color is going to be Spectra Blue Mica, it's touch up paint for the Toyota MR-S Spyder. The rims that I'm going to use are undecided, but I'm leaning toward Gold/Gunmetal XS Tuning Sport rims. I'm not going to use any 18in rims under this MX-5 because the make it look like its a 4x4. This is my first model that I painted most of the stuff with my airbrush.

Nothing is glued on yet. The engine block is flat aluminum, and i might use some black backwash to highlight the lines. All the suspension components are flat aluminum, the brakes are chrome silver and the calipers are testors gold. The exhaust pipe is Model Masters Aluminum metalizer. I painted the springs and spabilizer blue in the front and gold at the back.

I'm not sure if I'm happy with the color combo I'm using at the moment. I think I'll change from gloss blue to Angle Blue flat, the color of the seats. The steering wheel is from the extra parts in my GReddy kit. I backwashed the radio area with silver to make it stand out and I painted a few of the knobs. The clutch pedal was lost in the somewhere on its way from Japan so I'm going to fabricate a whole new set. The seats are flat black and Angle BLue flat, but the masking tape I used wasn't very good, it left glue residue and it let the black paint bleed through. So I have to sprip te paint and try again.

You did such a good job with the Greddy RX-7. I can't wait to see this one done.

Thumbs up Can't wait to see this one!

Lookin' forward to seeing this one! I've got the kit too, but no time to build it yet.

XS Tuning rims would be a great choice, since they aren't oversized and that is in width as well as diameter. I'm using them on my Celica and they work great. The brakes are a perfect fit too (once you trim off the kit-based alignment tabs), better than the Tamiya ones.

Yeah, I noticed it in an email notice. You can edit the original thread so it will read correctly.

Good to see a Miata in here, in a sea of EVOs and Skylines.

More Progress

Today I redid the seats and I used high quality 3M tape. I think they turned out pretty good. I also decided on the rims I'm going to use, they are from the ITR :finger: . I airbrushed the inside with a mix of Metalizer Gunmetal and Testors Gold, but I left the lip chrome. :sun:

What do you guys think of the interior color combo? Should I make it the same shade of blue thoughout?

Which is better?

Sorry about the bad pictures, the lighting was bad

It's looking good, can't tell much about the color of the seats. Check to see if your camera is on the Sunlight setting, that's what gives your pics the yellowish look.

I've done a similar thing with those ITR wheels. They're actually not too bad once the chrome is off of them and you slip on some higher profile tires. I hope the paint scheme is going to be a nice dark metallic blue. That would complement the fab interior and great wheel&tire combo perfectly.

Also, have you considered swapping in the engine from the Revell/Monogram 1/24th 1st gen Miata? There doesn't look to be much difference (save for maybe cam cover engraving or something like that. I'm no expert)

Thumbs up Lookin' good!

Like Veyron said, the color of the pics is deceptive, the wheel centers look realllly gold (I'm not fond of gold rims), but glad to see you using rims that actually fit a Miata, ITR and XS rims are the best choice since they look good and aren't too wide. Interior colors look decent, as long as the blue on the interior doesn't clash w/the blue exterior. I kinda like it in white (like the boxart and my 1:1 ride), but that's just me!

Nice to see a Miata being built, maybe someday I'll build a model of my own car.

I have built an Aoshima Miata:

I used 18's (Pegasus) and they really do look a bit goofy on the Miata, just a bit too big. I'll probably substitute some XS rims and brakes to get it sitting better.
