Flashback II; Deja Vu? 3 Pony Cars in One!

A few years back I built "Flashback", a Grabber Orange homage to the modern pony cars, Challenger front, Camaro midsection, Mustang tail end.

The idea hatched from an idea to build all 3 cars for a show theme, and I thought "hmmm, can I combine all 3 in 1?" and it went from there, pretty easily in fact. The problem for me at the time was the style of the model would have looked better w/a more tapered rear end, the 2010 Mustang rear would have looked better, but at the time the 2010 Mustang model wasn't even on the radar.

Scale Auto asked if I took photos of the orange model, and I had taken a few along the way, but not suitably hi-res. I wasn't keen on building a second unless/until a 2010 Mustang model arrived. Last year that happened, so I revisited the concept. I loved how the orange one looked, and loved the reactions, it went viral on the internet over the 2009 holidays. It was all over almost every blog, I think it even made it into an issue of Top Gear magazine.

Models used are AMT Dodge Challenger, AMT Concept Camaro, and Revell 2010 Mustang GT. I even was able to use the rest of the GT kit for a full-detail upgrade of the snap kit 2010 Mustang GT...story in the October issue. The story about this one is in the August 2012 issue of Scale Auto; it was finished last November.

Using the previous model for measurements, I had the basic bodies cut/spliced in a mere 4 hours. There isn't that much filler used on the model, most of it is in the rear quarter panels, there is very little in the front quarters. The parts fit together like it is meant to be...in fact the 2010 tail end is perfect in this case, a view from behind shows the tapered corners line up perfectly with the rearmost edge of the C pillars. The sum created is greater than all the parts combined, I really do think this is more attractive as a whole than any of the singular pony cars. The best of all worlds? I don't know, but it sure looks good in 1/25 scale.

I kept the interior simple, just some body-color inserts in the Camaro interior. This is more of a "styling study" than a full-blown contest model, done much like a lot of concept cars (don't look too close underneath a 1:1 concept car, you'll be shocked). There is no engine in the model.

Here are finished photos. I took these after I changed the wheels; I did not take beauty shots of the model w/the previous Mustang concept wheels, which over time bothered me as being a bit too large. That is how you see the model in the latest issue of Scale Auto, with the larger wheels. The new wheels came from a Maisto 2011 Mustang GT. They suit the model better, IMHO. Tires could be better, but the photos make them look worse than what they look like in person. I love the look of the Nassau Blue version, would love to drive a real one, just for the reactions!

Next? Who knows? I might combine vintage versions in a similar fashion...that'll really get the attention of purists

Great execution. Everything blends together so well you could easily see it as a production car.

Great job and excellent idea...
It's impossible, looking the pictures, to understand that this model car is not the latest release from revell or tamiya. Bravo!!!

Re: Flashback II; Deja Vu? 3 Pony Cars in One!

I hate it.

I am sorry, the craftsmanship is great, excellent build quality, and the paint is top notch, but I think the rear end is droopy and sad looking in comparison to the high shoulder lines and the boxy open grill. Maybe if the front end sloped down more it would work.

Don't get upset, I understand that a lot of people dislike most of my builds and I am not intending this to be insulting in any way.

Keep up the excellent work!

I like it! It's just plastic so have fun with it, right?

I like the way you carried the flat black from the hood down onto the doors, much like the original AAR Cudas

Beautiful work! It's really great work, and I am impressed with how well you made these kits work together. Awesome work, beautiful completion but... It's weirding me out!
