Tranny problem/question...electrical maybe?
Having a problem with my 00 4x4 5.3 silverado tranny, after driving it for a while today all of a sudden it wouldn't shift into 2nd and was slipping real bad, then lost all gears....no drive/reverse at all, but if I shut it off start it back up then it went into gear. It did this a few times while I was waiting for a tow, would lose all gears then would be ok after restarting it, but still slipped. Then after letting it sit waiting for the flatbed I started it and it shifted fine with no slipping. Sounds to me like a electrcal issue but wanted to check here to get some opinions. Thanks

my guess the sun shell is cracked. this is a common failure. if the shell is damaged get a new/rebuilt torque converter also a 1year warrantee. tell them to replace the solenids and a system fluid line flush. |

Re: Tranny problem/question...electrical maybe?
Actually, it was rebuilt about 2yrs ago because the sunshell cracked. I'd say it has no more than 15k on the tranny now, so I'm hoping it's not too bad, and I did have a ''beast'' shell put in. It's gonna go on a scanner Mon morning to see what's up.

Re: Tranny problem/question...electrical maybe?
if the transmission fluid system / radiator cooling fluid/ torque converter was not properly cleaned/replaced then this is gonna happen with the failure you had 2 years ago. this is quite common when things are not properly done.

Yea, thats classic symptoms. The reason why I asked about the fluid level and condition is if the fluid is real dirty then there is a chance that the filter is stopped up. Sometimes when a filter is stopped up there will be trash blocking it while the engine is running and when you shut off the engine the trans pump also shuts down and some of the trash in the filter will drop back down into the pan which will basically partially unplug the filter. When you start the engine again the trans will be able to get hydraulic pressure for a short time before it becomes stopped up again and the trans neutrals. Let me know what the trans shop says. I still think its a hydraulic issue. transman

Re: Tranny problem/question...electrical maybe?
what is the report of the transmissions failure ?
With 15,ooomi on a transmission repair, I would like to know the reason for failure. Others , with this type failure after a rebuild , it is usually the repair company using cheap parts and not properly cleaning the contamination up. cost for a proper repair with the sunshell failure should be around $2500................also it comes with follow up checks and the warrantee . |

Re: Tranny problem/question...electrical maybe?
Well, just got the bad news. Mech drove it this morning and said it was fine for a bit but then started shifting real hard in 1-2/2-3 then pulled the pan to find alot of metal shavings
Quoted between 2g 2300 for a rebuild. I've replaced trannys in cars quite a few times but never did a 4x4 truck before, how much is involved in a r&r and is it even possible w/o the use of a lift? Just trying to save some bucks here.

the norm is 2500 for this repair. the whole fluid system must be cleaned and a new/rebuilt torque converter to avoid another failure. you cheaped out the first time 1300 and now you back to this issue again. do you thing it will change if you try to repeat ? the other option would be scrap yard tranny. then sell vehicle. still though that fluid system will need a good cleaning. metal in the pan sounds like a sun shell failure , though could be other things. rapid failure like that is the sun shell most times. now that mess needs cleaning and that takes time and effort until done correctly. |

vehicle forum members have regretted buying 2007 and newer vehicles. the new vehicles are with more issues. also they have struts springs which do not offer the suspension support, that your vehicle has . post back how it all worked out. also what was the failure component . |
