Tamiya Avex NSX WIP

This is a late start on a WIP. However, I am at my favorite part...decaling. That seems like a great place to start a WIP for me. This is not a decaling job for the faint of heart. The majority of the car was white with just the nose, rear bumper, decklid and wing painted blue. Everything else is decal. Not litttle bity decals either. BIG decals. In true Tamiya faxhion thogh, they have been fabulous! I was terrified that the decals would be a disaster, not so. Here's where I am so far. Enjoy!

Well, I never knew this entire car is covered in decals. You have done a great job.

Great work so far! This looks like an awesome kit to build. I have never seen this livery from Tamiya before. Do you have a picture of the box by any chance?

Re: Tamiya Avex NSX WIP

Thanks for the comments! I just noticed that some of the photos look like the decals have huge bubbles in them but that is decal setting solution. The only trouble areas have been on the front wheel well arches. The areas are not as bad as I feared they would be though. A tip for anyone building this car is with the painting of the blue. The decals are very thin and see through. So far the TS-15 spray (as called for) is a great match for the blue decals. However, ANY blue paint on the white will greatly change the shade of the blue decals. Many of the edges are going to need to be touched up to cover the white edges left showing. X-4 Blue looks to be the same blue as the TS-15. Hopefully, I will have time to finish this up this week. Here is the box for this kit. It is one of the 4 NSX from this era that Tamiya did. There are variations in the body of the kits and not all 4 are the same.

Re: Tamiya Avex NSX WIP

Hey! Great job so far!
I´m actually 1 or 2 days behind you with the same project! But I got stuck with the blue colour. Maybe you can help me or share your experience.
I´m not trying to steal your thread below, but looking for some info for me, that could also help you.
I painted the 2 edges on the chasis with XF-8 "flat blue" acrylic (over silver as a base, but it gets completely covered), and used lots of glossy clear and polishing process. Then I compared THAT blue finish to those of the decals (still on the sheet). Blue paint seems to be a little bit "more red" than blue decals. With "more red" I mean maybe "less cold" (it´s difficult to speak about colors :/). In the end, it doesn´t look like a perfect match.
Also, I can see that you used TS15 which should be the same as X4 or XF8. Assuming your decals look the same as mines, your TS15 looks way lighter than my XF8.
Now the questions:
- did you paint that TS15 over a white base?
- did you give it many coats?
- did you paint any blue below blue decals on any part of the body?

Considering your comment about "see-thru decals", maybe my un-matched shade of blue is due to the light blue backing paper on the decals?

Hope all these helps you with the touch up. Any thoughts you can share may be appreciated.

I think we both agree the rest of the kit is perfect... So easy to build box stock!
