Unhappy 1999 Windstar Brake light works, tail light doesn't

The rear left tail light isn't working on my Windstar, but the brake light does. It is the same bulb. We have tried replacing the bulb, as well as the socket, with no luck. We have checked the fuses and they all seem to be good. My husband and I are by no means a mechanic, but we REALLY can't afford to take it somewhere to get this diagnosed & fixed. Any help and advice would be appreciated!

Re: 1999 Windstar Brake light works, tail light doesn't

I always start out by replacing all bulbs, both sides, cleaning and lubricating the bases as I go. It creates a good "starting point". Then I start to correct problems ... if there are any problems left! Just did this on a Ranger last week. Changing the lamps corrected all strange problems.

Keep in mind that 12v is constant on these lamps ... its the ground circuit that is switched by controls.
