You will only need an OBDII scanner. The Can-OBDII didn't come into use until 2009 for most cars. However, if you ever plan to purchase a new car then then why not purchase the newer model scanner since it should work on both. Make sure to check the manufacturer's literature before you purchase to be certain that it will work.
