Thanks to AF! and a bit on Park Ave Cabin Air Filter.
I recently purchased a 98 Park Ave. A/C air flow output was minimal so, checked the Owner's Manual for location/instructions on replacement.
Yeah, not so very helpful. Checked the internet, and AF had the best advice. The Hastings site has the most helpful diagram. Google "Hastings Cabin Air Filter AF 1088" and you'll find it. Armed with this knowledge, I go back under the dash. After several minutes of bleeding and sweating, I find the little tabs I'm supposed to pull on to remove the filter break off with very little provocation. EPIC FAIL! The reason I'm posting is because I found a solution: Remove the handle from a five gallon bucket. Not the plastic handle kind--the heavy wire kind. The handle's curve is about perfect to get into that ridiculous position required. Aim the hook on the bucket handle into the D-shaped hole in the edge of the filter, twist slightly, and pull firmly toward you. BINGO! (You have no idea how long it took me to figure this out.) I should note that the Park Ave I bought has 250K on it and the cabin air filter had been replaced---ummm--NEVER!!! There was enough dirt and debris in that filter to plant corn. That's why it wouldn't come out. Nonetheless, this is, without a doubt the most hateful, mean-spirited bit of engineering I have ever encountered--and I have replaced a blower motor in an old Mercedes AND installed plug wires on a 95 Buick Roadmaster! If you are reading this because you have or are going to replace the cabin air filter in your Park Ave or Cadillac Seville, you have my permission to cut and paste the following letter to General Motors Customer Care: Dear General Motors Customer Care: Hello, and greetings to you! I hope you are having just a lovely day. I really, genuinely hope I'm not being a bother at all here, but would you ever so kindly send me the name and address of the individual or individuals who designed the cabin air filter system on my 1998 Buick Park Avenue? Thanks ever so much! ![]() Bob Bobson P.S. Oh, if the person or persons who designed the system would happen to be DEAD it would be just fabulous to know that too! Please include details on length and degree of pain and suffering. Thanks Again! You're welcome. No charge. Last edited by 1plaiddanl; 04-02-2012 at 10:22 PM. Reason: 'nother sentence needed. |
