Coming out of lurk mode (completed 1st model - Tamiya NSX)
Hello all,
I've been browsing the boards for a few weeks. I've always been into model cars and had around 75 1:43 Matchbox and Majorette cars when I was younger. Sold them all when I left for university. My interest in models was rekindled when I came upon this forum and subsequently http://italianhorses.net/ . I used to drive a Toyota MR2 and love mid-engined cars, so I picked up a Tamiya NSX yesterday and finished it today. My work has, without a doubt, yielded in the shittiest model I have ever seen anywhere on the net. I'm 22, but I have the motor skills and finger dexterity of a 9 year old with Parkinsons. Also, I'm lazy and cheap. I only bought 3 Tamiya colors for this model, aluminum, semi gloss black, and clear red. I'm still debating whether I should consider modelling as a viable hobby, hence the half assed job on this one. I think I could do a much better job on my next model. I started gluing and painting the engine details and chassis. Painting the body was almost an afterthought. I've never painted or sanded anything in my entire life, so this was a "small" challenge. My first coat of primer was flawless; I mean this thing was mint. I got smooth and even coverage all over the model with no orange peel. With my new found confidence and after reading various sources I decided to try a second coat of primer. Thats when things went wrong. The primer started running and peeling and doing all sorts of funky stuff. I needed to sand it down, so I went to Home Depot and bought some "industrial grade" sandpaper. I then stupidly proceeded to completely scratch the primer off the model, then scratch the plastic off the model, and finally scratched off a bit of skin on my thumb. At that point I was pissed. Too lazy to get putty (and not knowing what to do with it anyway), I just decided to spray the model with primer again and then two coats of paint. The end result is what you see. While taking the photographs I also managed to break the model. My next model will be a Tamiya Yamaha R1, because it's my favourite bike and is larger scale. I'll be spending a few weeks or perhaps months on this one. No expense will be spared in making it. Anyway, with a quick show of hands, how many of you think my NSX is the worst model you've seen ? --lonerider ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

woo, waay too low grit sandpaper! What grit did you use?
You have a lot of potential, and have you read the faq? there are some really good painting tutorials.

You got the assembly down pretty well by the looks of things. Once you get your spraying sorted, you'll be surprised how well your models turn out.
I reciently started back after not making a model since I was 14 (5 odd years ago), and so far I've made 1/3 of a model since the start of march :o . Just take things slow, if you're not sure how to do something, think it over and have a look around this site. There's LOTS of good info on this site alone . And make sure next time you buy some sandpaper to use something a little finer! 1200 and 2000 grit's are good to have .

Yeah i read the FAQ and everything, but I couldn't find the higher grit sandpaper so I went with 150 grit or something like that. My first time sanding so I don't really care though.

Actually, now that I think about it this model turned out quite nicely.
I was going for the "didn't pass QC at the factory" look ![]() -- lonerider |

You should've left it at the first coat of smooth primer
![]() Then you can say it's so high performance it doesn't need paint.
