Smile Got the Williams FW24 today!

A very nice model! The monocoque is in two halves, other than that, not as many panels to fool with as on the recent Ferrari's. There are no blue decals for the large blue fields, it must be painted TS51 Telefonica Blue. Nice to see Tamiya hasn't forgotten the adult modeler's by oversimplifying, plus they can sell more paint! There are scribings on the body work to mark the blue areas.
The all new brakes are nice, seperate rotors and calipers. A wheel nut is made onto the wheel, for pit display you pull the wheels off and replace them with a one piece axle/nut which press fits into the hub as the wheels do. Jack stands are included which hold the car up minus the tub which detaches by removing small, easy to lose screws.
Seat belts are molded in plastic and are seperate pieces, when is Tamiya going to discover photo etch??? The belts are semi delicate and nice but not as good as a S27 set. The side pods have good detail but the actual engine and engine area leaves much to be desired for those of you who like like a good start for detailing. Maybe the team was stingy with info as usual they are.
An adhesive type foil has been provided for heat shielding for the rear suspension and exhaust outlet area.
Formula One fans will be very happy with this latest, and hopefully not last offering.

PS. Of course S27 and Acu Stion are already releasing detail sets and decals for other versions.

Re: Got the Williams FW24 today!

Here's a question for you Brian, or any other F1 fan that cares to answer.

Do you think TS-51 is an accurate match to the blue on the Williams or is it Tamiya making what they already have in their paint range work?

I am not certain it is an accurate match and I will admit I can't decide whether the blue on the Williams is indeed metallic as I have yet to find a good enough photo to discern.

Guido, haven't you seen the real car?

That is a very good question, Ray, they pulled the same stunt with TS50 for the Subaru which was a color already in their line. They have so many blues in their line they probably didn't want to formulate another.
I would say the FW24 is metallic or pearl more likely.

FW24 color

The color is probably accurate. I received some Crescent models FW22 and FW23 kits and the paitn matches the chip included pretty well.
Studio 27 is shipping the PE sets for the FW24 and hi-tech decals for it on June 20th.
BTW I stock the paint and will have the decals an PE sets in around the 25th of June.

Question

I just noticed Tamiya's decal printer didn't print the white Michelin name over the blue field on the tire decals, which are the usual rub on type. Guess I'll have to get some aftermarket replacements, so much for quality control!

I've seen the Williams up close, and it's indeed metallic, but TS-51 might be a bit too dark to match the decal, if sprayed from the can. So, it's probably better to use airbrush, and control the thickness of paint.
White area is pearl, but it's almost unnoticeable. I'd recommend to use very small amount of pearl powder, instead of using pearl white or pearl coat.

Thanks! Pearl powder it is then, it will make a beautiful model. I suppose they could have picked a lighter blue for the model to make up for scale effect.

True dat, and Tamiya's white pearl isn't very shimmery anyway, then again it probably isn't white enough.

Here are a couple of pics that I took last year in Silverstone.

There's a couple more on my site.

Weekend of 12-jul-2003 I'm going to Goodwood Festival Of Speed in the UK and apparently JPM is going to run there in the FW24. So I'll try to get some good detail shots this time!

Probably the first to receive the kit on this Forum I think.

Mine's on it's way from Japan, got the shipping notice from HLJ last Thursday, so hopefully it will be here by Friday/Saturday.
