Replacing starter solenoid contacts

It would appear that I need to replace my starter solenoid contacts on my 1995.5 rodeo. It is a 4wd Standard. 101,000 miles.

I've read where some people have removed the starter by removing a motor mount and tranny mount and jacking the engine up to get the starter out.

Does this really work?

I figure I can replace just the contacts and save some money.

Is it possible to replace the contacts while the starter is in the vehicle but disconnected?

I live in Vermont and there is no way I will be able to get those exhaust bolts loose without breaking them.

I have also read that some people take the starter apart to take it out but I rather not do that if I don't have to.

Re: Replacing starter solenoid contacts

The best way to remove the starter is to jack up the engine with a floor jack and a piece of wood to protect the oil pan. Unbolt the motor mounts on both sides by going through the wheel opening. Taking apart the starter isn't a good idea. Leave the tranny mounts alone.

Re: Replacing starter solenoid contacts

I see you have a lift kit on your Rodeo and I do not. Did that make a difference for you being able to remove the starter by jacking up the engine?

No. I only have a small 2 inch suspension lift.

Re: Replacing starter solenoid contacts

So I ordered a solenoid contact kit - $13.00 shipped to me. Includes the contacts and plunger.

Is it possible and maybe easier to just replace these without removing the starter?

If I recall, I replaced these on a 2000 dodge caravan I had once and the only contact that was bad was the negative one. I did it without removing the starter from the engine.

Re: Replacing starter solenoid contacts

I really doubt you can get enough access to do it with the starter in place. Dodge Caravan starters practically change themselves, they are so easy to get to.
