98 silverado 4x4 remove air bag???

I had a slight head butting contest with a deer. My driver side AIR BAG BLEW OUT.
I want to replace the air bag. ( I live in N.C. air bags are NOT required) so I don't care if it is functional. I just want it there un-blown, for looks. I've been told that a special tool is required to remove the old one ( and the one in a salvage truck I've located) DOES ANYONE HAVE A CLUE WHAT TOOL I NEED?? Or what it might be called or where I can get one????

Looked in my '98 service manual. Only tool needed is a screwdriver to release the spring pins from the rear of the wheel.

For less than $30 for a year subscription you can get all the info you need.

your statement "I live in north carolina and air bags not required " I thought was quite incorrect.

not from your area, well who knows what goes on down there .

anyway its all your vehicle , but as of mar 2010 the law is this;

It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to knowingly install or reinstall any object in lieu of an air bag, other than an air bag that was designed in accordance with federal safety regulations for the make, model, and year of vehicle, as part of a vehicle inflation restraint system. Any person, firm, or corporation violating this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. (2003‑258, s. 3.)

NORTH CAROLINA LAW.

Re: 98 silverado 4x4 remove air bag???

I thank you for your response. As to the added remark about the NC Law that also is correct. BUT I AM NOT PUTTING IN ANY THING THAT IS NOT A CORRECT AIR BAG FOR THIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE. That said: at this time, the state of NC does NOT require that vehicles have air bags, or for that matter if they have them, they do not require they are functional. The state does however require that any DEALER selling this vehicle must make the purchaser aware Verbally and in writing that the air bags have been deployed.
thanks tlc

like I stated before its your vehicle.

I read this law saying if you remove the air bag which the vehicle had when new / built , and cover up this removal/lack of one functional, then this could get you into trouble.

the vehicle could get into an accident and they do investigations with stuff like this, especially when an air bag vehicle does not deploy.

good luck

If operated on a federal funded highway you are subject to federal laws.
Do not be like Dillenger and Puttery Boy Floyd..
The state could not hang them but the fed's put the hurt on him.

Re: 98 silverado 4x4 remove air bag???

GUYS I got what you are saying and I have been in contact with the local DMV and I'm with in legal statutes. AND, no misrepresentation is or will occur. This automobile can have the replacement airbag reset at the local Chevrolet dealer. And would have to be done prior to passing inspections in a lot of states. I would like to thank 777 stickman for giving me the correct information to replace the airbag.
