How do I know if my oil pump is bad?
Yesterday I had my timing belt changed in my 96 Avalon. My car was fine all the way home. Last night I go to start the car and it was making a loud rattling sound in the top of the engine. They seem to think it's a bad oil pump b/c they said it sounds like it's starving for oil. Is there anyway to be sure before purchasing a new oil pump? Oh, and the oil light didn't come on..not sure if that makes a difference. Another guy said it sounds more like it could be lifters or something in the head itself. Any suggestions?

Did you have anything changed besides the timing belt? like the tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump?
In answer to your question, measure the oil pressure with a gauge.
