Hi. I'm new here. After reading literally dozens on posts on several forums related to my issue, I've decided nobody has resolved the same issue as mine....or at least they haven't had the same cause of the issue.
its a 5 speed manual, 188000 kms, 3.9L v6. has AC. The trucks starts fine, runs awesome. After it warms up, the idle will stick around 2000 when clutch is pushed in or while in neutral. Everything runs fine while in gear. This issue comes and goes but generally happens every trip. When it doesnt stick at 2000rpm, it instead simply drops in rpm till it stalls(while clutch held in or in neutral) while driving its alright. I should make it clear....high idle or idle drop off are the two issues, it works great in between these intermitant issues. I do own the manual for the truck and so I've tested the TPS circuit as well as the IAC and the MAP. The Temp sensor resistance increases as the truck sits and cools(ignition off) as it should. I've checked all vacuum lines and possible vacuum leak areas. The throttle cable is NOT sticking or binding. I took a look through the tb butterflies into the intake and it is spotless. I've checked all grounds and connections everywhere under the hood. I also own the same trouble code reading as the local shops. No codes coming up. I would imagine if it were somehow a vac leak, the the rpms would fluctuate rather than periodically stick at 2000?? I'm no pro but also no rookie under the hood. ANY thoughts or suggestions. I'm sure I forgot to mention some things ive already tried but please feel free to troubleshoot this with me. many friends who are mechanics are stumped on this one. I will ad the I did replace the tps and iac motor. Also the issue started when then weather dropped down to -30c out here in Alberta Canada. Also the altitude in my city is higher than the city I bought it in if it matters. But again, it runs great while in gear. Thanks and Cheers. Last edited by ReidWallace79; 01-21-2012 at 12:16 PM. Re: 2002 Dakota sport 3.9 IDLE issues
When you were testing was it acting up? If not maybe you've got an intermittent issue with one of the sensors.
My truck was having issues with dying when pulling up to stop signs and it was the throttle position sensor. I never had a high idle problem, though. |

Reid have you cleaned the passages behind the iac motor?

Reid , my computers acting up ,sorry if I posted this twice. Have you cleaned out the passages behind the iac motor. I've heard they can become clogged?

Re: 2002 Dakota sport 3.9 IDLE issues
Thanks for replying. Actually it wasn't a perfect idle but was close. I should edit my post as I was tired when I wrote it. I ending up replacing the tps incase those sensors could "intermittently" fail. I cleaned out the port for the iac as well. The iac looked original as it had thread lock or some goop on the threads. So I swapped it out with a new one. I think I will double check for leaks around the injectors as well as replace the o-rings and tb gasket. I have to wonder if any vacuum leak would cause such a great increase in Roma rather than just cause a looping effect?!

try checking your battery, and altenator, if the voltage isn't steady, stalling will happen good luck
