I suppose I’m disappointed how this turned out and I wouldn’t have finished it except I really like this color scheme. There are lots of flaws.

Originally I got the CB-COM TK but it was just terrible. A resin rear spoiler, front bumper and back bumper. All worthless chunks with wrong shapes and warped. Four wheels that needed probably as much work as everything else together. Some of the spokes were just flashing and the wheels were all different and not close to round. Unbelievably bad. Round at the back and oval in front. Awful and so fragile with hardly enough thickness to allow any sanding. The tires were resin and part of the wheel. I spent a lot of time on the wheels and they are still awful. I’ve thought about sanding the tires off and putting on the tamiya ones or even ordering some Renaissance ones.

I gave up on the other parts and scratchbuilt bumpers and rear spoiler and the mirrors. Every panel needed some modification except the doors which needed the new mirrors. New grill and radiator arrangement too.

The decals looked great but I suspected they wouldn’t fit and that they would be very brittle and I was right on both! I painted a lot of the red but still had lots of problems. I wanted to do the Catalunya car but all the stripes and BASTOS logos were for the San Remo rally. However not all the decals for San Remo were included, biggest of all being the banner across the top of the windshield. No easy way out. Between corrections and decals falling apart, there were a lot of touch ups.

I was pretty happy with the way the modifications turned out. It’s too bad the paint has let everything else down. Some PE bonnet pins are on order and that will be it. Anyway she is off the bench and on the shelf. Starting was more fun than finishing but I learnt quite a bit.

considering the problems you have mentioned, i think youve done a great job with the conversion. If you don't try these conversions, you don't learn anything and end up with another WRC like everyone else

Apart from your problems it turned out nice. Don't waste your time with renaissance wheels as they are just as aweful although i haven't seen their newer issues. Their older rally and 360 wheels are useless.

Don, you did a great job while having to deal with the sh...y cbcom stuff !!
Perhaps ride height is a bit to high or wheels a bit to small (renaissance wheels aren't perfect but are better than cbcom ones) but except that it seems perfect from the pics !!
especially knowing you scratchbuilt the body kit from the tamiya 206 WRC

Despite all the troubles you catalog, I'd say it looks pretty good. I'm glad there are modelers like you out there who are willing to go through all the hassles of builds like this so modelers like me don't have to.

Pippin: it is a Tamiya Kit with modified bodyparts in plastic and lots of putty. Those rims are correct for that car so I won't change to something different. It is the quality that is the issue.

Phil: the wheels are just a big issue. There a couple of spokes gone from the spare because they are so thin. Front to back there is hardly anything. I wish I'd taken some pics. The ride height is something else. They are definitely higher than a WRC. The wheels seem right for that rally but I would like some taller tyres. Each wheel actually sits at different height. I had to do each hub custom because the centre is in the centre of the wheel out front but behind the centre of the wheel is not in the centre. If you turn the wheels you will get a bigger and then smaller gap to the bodywork. If you tried to drive this car all the wheels would wobble and bounce the car up and down!! Below is a photo of the car. It is the only one of it parked that shows the wheels and I think it shows quite a high ride height.

Sorry for sounding so down on this one!! You spend good money on a useless TK and end up making a much better job yourself. And I'm supposed to be the amateur and them the professionals. Not sure how to feel about that.

I'd be interested on your views on CB COM decals Phil or anybody else. I have a couple of more sets to use. Next one is Cedric Robert in his 03 Deutschland Evo 3.
Which I've just noticed is spelt Deutschanld on the decal sheet...........

Don, anyway correct ride height isn't simple to obtain when working with cbcom stuff...
As you noticed yourself, none of the wheels are round and none of the hubs are centered !!
I still think even if ride height is quite high on the model it seems a bit too high... but it's surely due to the not enough thick tires...

My feedback about cbcom in general is direct: he was a thief selling shit for money, many dealers have had troubles with him and many customers too.

decals from the brand are most of the time incorrect, uncomplete etc.
He used to design a car in 2 hours (according to his own sayings) when other brand usually take a full day or two !!
He didn't care about quality, just money...

You have to know he has had two different generations of decals, the last one was oki printed, and those are only to throw directly in the trash can !! He was so unskilled to use the oki than he never was able to print white without a color background... I let you suppose what it gives over painted models. Moreover most of those decals simply don't stay alive in water or just wrinkle if you clear coat them (which is absolutely to do if you want a chance to apply them...) so it's an everlasting problem.

I can't remember exactly when he changed the printing process, but if your decals have color square or rectangle backgroung under writtings, it's for sure this last generation decals... the good tip to see it is the drivers names, if they are written in a black rectangle background it's oki printed decals.

I can't say a lot more, they are hard to work with but you may make it applying them though. Experienced modelers have that chance, especially if they are warned about the problem before.

Cedric Robert's decals may still be real decals and not oki printed. if yes that's your chance.
