96 cavalier messed up again

ok my cars check engine light started flashin yesterday so i hooked a innova 3160 scanner to it and got a po302 code but the I/M monitor icons CAT, O2S, HTR, EGR, AND EVA just keep flashing. what should i do about that because i know it has a cyl 2 misfire but im not made of money so i can just go from injectors to fuel pump just replacing parts.

Re: 96 cavalier messed up again

get a spark tester and hook to that cylinder and see if good spark.check plugs and wires.could be a dirty or bad injector.could also be compression related......burned valve ect.

Re: 96 cavalier messed up again

ok just did a compression test cyl.1=180 cyl.2=135 cyl.3=175 cyl.4=174 and cyl. 2 held its compression so other tham it being a burn valve and needing to be replaced ( just rebuilding the whole top end) what other things should i check for. lookin for a cheaper and less time consuming fix if at all possible.but its still just throwing out the PO302 code only

I would do another compression test on # 2 this time squirt some oil into the clyinder, if the compression increases the rings a leaking if not you know that it is in the valves or head area.

On that unit they'll continue to flash until you've driven the car enough to complete a 'drive cycle'.

Not really.....it flashes because the car is misfiring so bad, that it can cause cat damage.....for example, if you start the car, and it is flashing, that misfire is real bad.....or you may start the car, it doesn't flash until you put it in gear or under a load....if under a load it flashes, by lightly using the accelerator pedal, it will stop flashing....has nothing to do with a drive cycle, has to do with how bad the misfire is in that moment in time....

Re: 96 cavalier messed up again

the class 2 missfire that can cause catalyst damage on older cars the pcm will flash the mil.....on newer cars pcm can disable injectors.....it should have been like that before so people would not drive it......as far as the scan tool flashing like stated...i hooked a innova 3160 scanner to it and got a po302 code but the I/M monitor icons CAT, O2S, HTR, EGR, AND EVA just keep flashing. must be the scan tool.I heard this before.I have never used before.

Re: 96 cavalier messed up again

the flashing check engine light means that it has a severe misfire.
the flashing lights on the scanner means that the car is in failsafe mode, and those tests (o2, etc) cannot be performed until the misfire is cleared and the car is drivin a full drive cycle. sounds like bad plugs/wires, or a failing coil pack. most auto parts places can bench test the coil pack and the plate the sit on...

I was refering to the flashing icons on the Innova 3160 scanner.
