08 Impala Power Steering Whine

Have a 2008 Impala with 3.9l and 115,000 miles. Have a whine coming from the front of the engine area that is directly related to engine rpm. I suspect it is coming from the power steering pump. Any ideas on how to isolate the steering pump to confirm that is the source of the noise? Is this there a normal source of whine in the area I am over looking? Any other thoughts you can offer.

Thanks,
Teegolf

The serpentine belt idler pulley is a possible source of the noise as well as the serpentine belt itself if it is the original factory installed unit .

I understand it isn't an option for everybody, but if you were to work with a dealership towards diagnosis this concern please send me a private message as I am available to assist in this process.

Idler pully, tensioner pully, a/c compressor bearing, ect... The easiest way to locate it is to use a stethascope. Some parts stores sell them as do tool stores. Take the end off of the hose of the scope and just listen through the hose end. Move the hose near all rotating parts until you find where the noise is loudest. Be careful to keep hands and the hose away from the belt!!!!

If you think it is a power steering whine it probably is. turn the steering wheel and if the whine pitch varies is is most likely the pump.

GM does not give details on fluid change intervals on this power steering pump .. my experience is 75,ooomi replace this fluid with prestone power steering fluid and conditioner for GM vehicles. after a few days or minutes the noise should go away or be very low.

never operate the engine with the fluid out of the pump. if you have to suck out the fluid and install new. this is the safest DIY way to do this job. if you drain out the fluid by removing hoses make sure both wheels are off the ground when refilling and your turning the steering to purge out air.

Re: 08 Impala Power Steering Whine

Guys,
Thanks for the input. The tip about taking the end off the stethescope was priceless. Turned out upper front idler was making the whine. Changed it and belt. All quiet now.
