GMtech1 had already noted that it wouldn't be simple to swap in electric steering, even though the body and engine is the same for a Cavalier as for a Cobalt/G5/Pursuit (2005).
But now I've found out that there is a serious problem with the electric steering on these GM vehicles:

GM Recall: Chevrolet Cobalt & Pontiac G5, Pursuit, G4 – Power Steering Failure
March 3, 2010

General Motors has quietly announced a recall of over one million compact cars, as posted in a statement dated March 2nd, 2010 on the GM website. This recall affects the power steering units in the following automobiles:
• 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt
• 2007-2010 Pontiac G5
• 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada)
• 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 (Mexico)
The automobiles referencing other countries are the locations where they were sold, not manufactured.

These are the very years that GM put in the electric steering.
My idea of gaining 5-6 horsepower by switching to electric power steering looks like its dead in the starting gate.
Unless I can find out exactly what is wrong, and what the fix might be, there seems no point.
Too bad, cause the gain in horsepower and weight looked attractive.
