I know your inspection is long gone, but what someone may have been trying to tell you, is that once the condition that caused the check engine light has been fixed, the light goes away after a certain number of times you drive the vehicle.

After three good trips the MIL(Malfunction Indicator Light or Check engine light) is extinguished and the Task Manager automatically switches the trip counter to a warm-up cycle counter. DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) are automatically erased following 40 warm-up cycles if the component does not fail again.
If you don't want to wait for that, you can disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes or so and it will reset the computer.
