2013 Mustang GT500 will take you to 200 mph

Auto enthusiasts interested in owning a 200-mph car at a (relative) bargain need wait no longer: The 2013 Ford Mustang GT500 will get you there.

At least, that's what Ford is pushing with the debut of their new 650 HP at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Tuesday.

2013 Ford Mustang grabs the spotlight at Los Angeles auto show

With a range-topping 650 hp, an alternative rock band and Carroll Shelby, the updated lineup of the 2013 Ford Mustang officially debuted on Tuesday night in Los Angeles at a glitzy event the night before the West Coast's spotlight auto show.

The Shelby GT500 was the star attraction, even with the blindingly yellow Boss 302 and convertible variants alongside. With an increase of 100 hp, the latest edition of the GT500 won praise even from its legendary namesake.

"I think it's the greatest Mustang that's ever been built," the 88-year-old legend told the crowd at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, after being introduced by Ford sales and marketing chief Jim Farley.

But he didn't stop there, effusing, "I've always been asked, 'What is your favorite car?' and I've always replied, 'The next one.' "

"Well, I'm taking that back tonight. This is my favorite car."

Ford revealed the refreshed version of the Mustang hours before the L.A. auto show kicked off, complete with a performance by alt rockers the Bravery.

Cosmetic upgrades to the Mustang line include a snarkier front end, HID headlights accented with LED strips and sequential taillights that flash in tandem with the turn signals. Additionally, the 5.0-liter GT now makes 420 hp, up from the current 412-hp output.

Ford has been doing a great job the last few years of upping their game in the performance department, focusing a lot of their attention (deservedly) on the Mustang lineup.

This will please a great deal of longtime Mustang fans. The question now is: How do we sign up to put the 200-mph claim to the test?
