Fresh fluid would probably help....how long has it been since you've changed the fluid? Since it only does it once each time, that indicates to me that there's some contamination (possibly moisture?) that is settling where it doesn't need to be, and the first shift is affected.

Re: cold long shift from 2 to 3erd

Hi Mcgee139,

I have copied and pasted below what solved my problem in my 1997 GC Limited 7 Years ago...that is right 7 (seven) years ago. In cold weather my wife's Jeep was running up to a high RPM and then "Bam" shifting like it had a shift kit in it.

A minute later it was fine. I was told I needed a new transmission. Wrong.

That was at roughly 77,000 miles. We have 125,000 on that beautiful machine now and it still shifts great in cold weather. The info below the dotted line is from dec of 2004 but the product is still sold by my local Tire guy and I would not hesitate to do it again...cost back then was about $225 total. Good Luck no matter what!! Mike McCann

.....................Here is post from way back when....December of 2004....
Hi All,

Okay, I lied...I said I wouldn't check into this thread again unless I had a problem with the tranny shifting after the chemical flush.

It is still working great after almost 2 months.

I finally found the chemical product that worked. Before I share anymore, I want to say that this is not a commercial...I sell real estate...not chemical flushes.

According to my service guy, (see deeper in the thread for who) the product is a two step process made by BG. He called it a BG Transmission Flush. I asked if he could show it to me. There were two small cans shrinked wrapped together with each can about the size of a 12oz cola. One said "Quick Clean" and the other said "ATC Plus" .

He said they add one can and then drive (or run) the vehicle for about 10 or 15 minutes. They then drain all the tranny oil including the converter, and change the filter.

They add all new tranny fluid and the 2nd can of BG product. That is about all I know. I did find a website for BG but no specific mention of this product. (I did not search that long, though)

We have put about 700 miles on since I last posted and all is good.

Hope this helps someone...beats a new tranny this winter anyway.

Mike

Re: cold long shift from 2 to 3erd

that is some what normal when cold,,,,,,transgo or superior shift kit would help,,,,synthetic atf also helps,,,also like "lub-guard" brand additive.....tranny-in-a-can,,,or other snake oils ,,not a good bet......
this condition is related to throttle position,in relation to tv position and the fact that a cold stiff car doesn't move as easy as a warm one.....
