Cost for changing an oil pan gasket on '98 PA

The dealer quoted me $265 to change the oil pan gasket on my 1998 Park Avenue. Is this reasonable? Seems high to me.

Get your own gasket and a quote for labor to install it from several reputable independent shops. You will save some $$$ Click Here

Make sure its not the valve cover gaskets. When these leak oil travels right to the pan which makes it look like the pan gasket is leaking.

I changed the oil pan gasket on my moms Park Avu Ultra which is probably identical to the Park Ave you own...It took me 2 and a half hours with NO vehicle lift...just a set of jack stands.

1998...Park Ave Ultra...fwd...3.8L v6......Yeah, I'd say real reasonable for a dealership...So reasonable infact that I'd be willing to bet you could get it done for half that much at a well respected independent shop. Replacing the oil pan on that car is a 2 hour job at a qualified shop....Soooo...the dealership is 'only' charging you $132 dollars an hour.

What about the cost of the oil pan gasket? In some cases, the pickup tube has to be removed to remove/install the gasket...this involves another gasket, and labor to remove it....what about sealer for the new gasket? Can of Brake Klean to clean the surfaces? What about the cost of an oil change? It all adds up to lowering the labor cost you assumed...oh, and don't forget the government's cut, too....they love their tax cut(any good shop would include this in their cost write up).....

$265 = 2 h labour + oil change + oil + filter + shop supplies + eco charges + EPA donations + union dues +

OK, they're likely charging you $60 or so for an oil change + a gasket + oil filter. Shop labour is likely closer to $90/h.

If you go to another shop I'd get your own oil pan gasket of your choice. Non-dealer shops may quote low, but supply a poor quality gasket.
