Generator Light came on

I have no idea where to post this. We have a 1997 3500 Dodge Ram 4x4 with 244,000 Km on it. It has been a great truck. We noticed a smell coming from the engine when we drove it today and the generator light came on.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Re: Generator Light came on

Could be a bad alternator, bad belt or just about anything under the hood.
