Oil light and battery light came on, car quit running
I had my oil changed monday for the first time by someone other than my brother. Aside from waiting an hour I assumed everything was done ok. Last night I was driving and all of a sudden I lost power in the gas pedal. I noticed the oil light and battery light had both come on. My car stalled and refused to start again. I had been smelling oil a little bit and something like burning plastic but it wasn't enough to concern me. I didn't leak any oil that I noticed and I can only hope it had something to do with the oil and not a more serious problem. Has anyone had this problem? Know what it might be? My brother is pretty good at fixing cars but only when we know what is wrong. I know tomorrow I have to take my car in anyways for somekind of recall but that was for the ignition and shouldn't have anything to do with the oil I assume. Any ideas?

Either your timing belt broke or a timing gear. Just happened to me yesterday. I'm surfing trying to find out if the 2.2l Ecotec is an Interference Engine or not... if it is we got some valve damage to deal with, if not... we're sitting pretty my friend. I got the 2.2l 4 cyl. 1997.

Well my friend it looks as if we both may have the same problem. I just bought a 98 pontiac sunfire, Ive had it 2 months to the date and its done nothing but stall but now has gotten worst. I have changed the fuel filter, had a tune up, changed air filter, had a fuel system injection ran threw it. Its pathetic. I was told today that they "think" I have to have a new fuel pump. The oil and battery light are comming on due to lack of gas getting to the engine. Which in a way I think is......well not true. Actually since i've had my tune up when this tends to happen im some how in a turn or going down hill, and it feels like my power steering went out. Did your car do that???? But I have been lucky that when I turn it off and turn it on no problems... So when u find out whats up w/ ur car. Please let me know bc I'm not into payin 400$ for a fuel pump. Thanks Bunches......

I would say that your problem is in no way related to what we've gotten into. I would take it to a GM dealer and have them look into it. Or at least someone that's worth it... there should be no "think". A timing chain failure is deadly and absolute...not what you're describing. I'm don't know cars from adam but i know what happened to mine. Valve damage and all... I'm buying a used engine and doing a swap. before the engine does get dropped in however I am getting a new timing set put in...So I leave with this warning to all... If you have a sunfire...change your timing chain! they say every 60k... and if your engine is ticking...for the sake of your bank account get the chain checked...$1500 is about what it's going to cost me...
