tranny removal

I have a 99 montana in which im pretty sure the camshaft has broken on. I have come to this conclusion by the engine running super bad and the oil light is on, but it has plenty of oil in it. I was on the highway when it died, when i took the oil cap off there was lots of smoke coming out and it wouldnt restart. Now it starts half the time but sounds like only 3 cylinders are firing. Any suggestions? Our mechanic has said its probably not worth fixing cuz it has over 200k miles. Question 2. To remove the tranny, do i need any special tools?
