need knowledge on how to change out motor mount 95 lumina LS 3.1L
As the title says, I need knowledge from the experts here on how to change out the motor mount (front passenger side under car). I have already removed the inner plastic covers in wheel well, removed both nuts on the motor mount and the tranny mount. Also removed both torque strut mounts up top (dog bones). I stuck some wood underneath the oil pan and tried to jack up the motor but it seems to be lifting everything up like something else is still connected to the frame somewhere but I can't see anymore connection points. What am I doing wrong? Also, if it will make the job any easier, I do have access to a motor lift.

Re: need knowledge on how to change out motor mount 95 lumina LS 3.1L
I took a break and went back out with a bright flashlight and just BARELY noticed that there were two more bolts left to take out in the motor mount. They were so covered in gunk that I never noticed them without the light. Here is a pic of it off the car in case anyone wants to see where the bolt holes are in the bracket that mounts to the motor.

You beat me to it. I just changed mine as well...then realized it wasn't the problem...front subframe mounts were shot. Best $50 in parts I ever spent on a car...took 100,000 miles off how it feels on the road...now I'm gonna do the rear two also, as I could see the cracks in the rubber while lying under it doing the fronts...
Kept getting a loud clunk and shifting sensation when hitting the gas and making a left turn...motor mount came to mind first, but while it was still intact, it was also pretty compressed and played out looking, so no loss for changing it...

Re: need knowledge on how to change out motor mount 95 lumina LS 3.1L
My big surprise was that the original was filled with fluid. I have never seen a motor mount that wasn't solid rubber. I hope it wasn't a bad choice, but I special ordered a new one that is solid rubber to put back in it's place. As a side note to anyone who may read this at a later date, we had started to hear a slight bump noise several months ago when shifting in and out of gears. I wrote it off as one of the CV joints starting to go bad and was just waiting on the temps to drop (been 100* or better for almost 2 months now almost every day) to get a new one. Anyways, wife called all frantic and said I needed to come look at it "NOW" ......so I did,
..... and sure enough when she shifted through the gears the passenger side of the motor was kicking back and forth several inches. I had no doubt what had been making that noise then. Not a fun job due to all the grime involved but not a hard one to do in the back yard once I found the other two bolts that were holding the motor from going up. |

Re: need knowledge on how to change out motor mount 95 lumina LS 3.1L
I degrease/clean my motor twice a year, once after the last snow, once in late summer/fall....really pays off when I gotta do undercar work like that...not much grime involved...makes hose, wires, etc last longer and supposedly helps it to run cooler as well in summer...all that crap is like wearing a blanket to your motor...
Yeah, lotta mounts now are fluid filled. Some even have two chambers and orifices like a shock absorber, that deaden the movement as the motor tries to rock back and forth...REALLY expensive...

Re: need knowledge on how to change out motor mount 95 lumina LS 3.1L
I totally agree on keeping things clean. The only area that was nasty was where the fluid had went everywhere when the mount failed. Then of course all kinds of debris just clinged to it. Its all clean now though. sprayed it all down and pressure washed it before installing the new one and WOW what a difference in drive-ability. Wish I had realized what it was a long time ago.
