Oil Leak on 2002 Grand Prix 3.8
I have an oil leak on a 2002 GP. Looks like it is coming from the oil pan area. Does anyone know if this is a common issue and have instructions for repair?

Re: Oil Leak on 2002 Grand Prix 3.8
AFAIK, I don't think it's a common issue, maybe other users will give their opinion.
How bad is the leak? If it's only a few drops you might have a problem with the gasket. If it looks like a big leak it can be the oil pressure sender unit located at the oil pan it has a connector (green I think) on it, not long ago another user had that problem and he saw it squirting oil while engine was running (massive leak). Another option could be the filter adapter gasket. Many times a fluid leak can seem to come from the oil pan but can be from a completely different location. You can try giving a good clean to the pan and driving for a while (while watching the oil level) to see if the problem is the pan gasket. Oscar.

Re: Oil Leak on 2002 Grand Prix 3.8
I suggest you check the valve cover gaskets. Leaks here, especially the rear one will look like an oil pan leak but much cheaper to fix. If the oil pan gasket is leaking you will need to raise the engine and drop the under carriage to get to the oil pan to fix it.
Another possible cause would be the oil pressure sending unit located over top the oil filter. This is a common source of oil leaks and can be fixed easily. If you have the ability to post pictures of the leak area it may help to diagnose the issue. |

Thanks for the replies. I will jack the car up within the next couple days and take pictures. The leak is relatively slow, about 3/4 qt per 3000 miles.

Re: Oil Leak on 2002 Grand Prix 3.8
I agree, you have to pinpoint the leak....washing down the engine would be a good start....oil dye and a black light would be a better one.....
There are several areas the oil can be coming from, as the guys have suggested....if it is the oil pan, replaced the plastic gasket.....you will note a ripple effect on the flat surface of the pan....because of this, you will have to RTV the top and the bottom of the plasitic gasket(TSB for this) to get a good seal....I put a thin layer over the sealing part of the gasket, and go around the inside of the bolt holes...... Real bad leak.......oil pressure sw.... From above, valve cover.....on SC'ed engines, there is a campaign for front valve cover gaskets....to a lesser extent, the lower intake gasket... |

Re: Oil Leak on 2002 Grand Prix 3.8
Can get the dye from any parts store, but you need a black light to see it...
You can clean the engine with any stong detergent and water hose......but enviromentally, that could cause problems.......or if the area is "suspect", use a can of Brake Klean on the area, and see if the leak reappears... |
