new deck question

Hey I have a couple of question on installing a new HU. I have a 95 g20t and I am interested in a alpine cda-9813, just wondering all that I would need to do the install? I read somewhere that you have to bypass the amps and buy new speakers, is this true?

Not really true. You need a wire harness adapter thingy (looks like a honeycomb with wires coming out of one end). That will connect your existing wire harness to an adapter thingy so you just match up the colors, connect, and go.

As for bypassing amps and replacing speakers, you don't really NEED to, but it does give you better sound. See, the problem is, with the stock HU, the signal that is sent out is not powered. That's why there are amps to amplify the non-powered signal, and then go into the speakers. When you put in almost any new HU, that HU already amplifies the signal before it leaves the HU. The problem comes in when the already amplified signal goes through the amp and gets powered up again. Now there is too much power going into the speakers, and they are far more likely to blow. If I were you, try just installing the HU if you aren't too worried about the sound. If you end up blowing some speakers, then you know you need to bypass the amps. It's not hard, and you can just post back here and I can give you directions.

I heard somewhere that with the alpine 9813 you can actually turn off the internal amp so the HU is sending an unamplified signal. If this is true souldn't it delete any sound problems?

hi, i'm brand new and i'm just wondering if you need some kind of adapter to fit regular size decks into the g20. It looks as though the stock deck is a little bigger. Also, if these are nessecary, where can one be found? Thanks a lot, this seems like a great forum.

Nope they fit right in. It's a standard DIN slot. Use www.crutchfield.com for fit guides, they're very helpful.

To deftone:I have no idea about the alpine HU, I bought a Kenwood MPV7019 which plays MP3 CDs, and has preamp outs. I didn't have to bypass my amps and everything sounds good.

Thanks a lot guys for such a quick response. I had been looking and it didn't really look like anyone had posted recently so i was worried i might not get a response. Thanks again. Anyway, do you guys happen to know what size the speakers are in this car (front & rear)?

I don't know about front. I just had to buy a new rear off eBay because mine was blown, and it is 2 ohm and about 5.5x5.5" I think..

I was also planning to install a deck in my 96 infinity g20.
I was planning to use the existing amps and speakers.

Called up Crutchfield. The deck I was buying (clarion db336mp) does have preouts. However they told me that connecting the preout to the
standard harness (instead of the amplified signals) will NOT work.
They claim that the voltage level is not the same needed by my AMPs!
I would have to buy a special $50 harness that lowers the
amplified signals to a lower level.

Most of the posts in this forum claim that with a deck with
preouts once can easily use the existing amps -- none of the posts mentioned the special harness.

Has anyone had experience with the using the preouts?

thanks for you help.

Hmmm... this was a long time ago but I KNOW the deck is connected using the factory amps and the preouts on the deck. We DID have to buy a connector, but not for $50 - it was $15 at the local Crazy Bob's. It's just a harness converter as I remember.
I don't remember much else. Hope that helps.
