Power steering pump is leaking...
Looks like my ps pump is leaking, looks like it's at the spot where the shaft meets the pump (see photo)? Is this an easy seal to replace or maybe I should just grab a pump at the junk yard and hope it's not a leaker?

Re: Power steering pump is leaking...
That's actually the gearbox, not the pump. You could reseal it, but you need special tools to do it correctly, such as a pitman arm puller, etc. You're better off with a rebuilt unit.

Re: Power steering pump is leaking...
If this is a small leak I have used prestone power steering fluid with the seal conditioner...I replace the power steering fluid after 6yrs..I use this type fluid to refill ...since I keep the vehicles for 10-20yrs this stopped all my leaks...
If the leak was at the output pitman arm gear box seal this would be a seal that is worn and normally can be replaced with not too much work...did one on a 85 olds..took about 2 hrs.. |

Re: Power steering pump is leaking...
If it is not dripping fluid then there is nothuing to worry about. Any seal that seals a rotating shaft needs some minor seepage to keep the seal lubed and from burning up or getting damaged. If it is very slightly damp with dust sticking to the fluid it is normal. If it is dripping, then there is cause for concern. If you replace the gearbox you will still need a pitman arm puller to do the job. Try j Cat's recommendations first.

Re: Power steering pump is leaking...
Drain out about 6 oz. of fluid from the PS reservoir and add some of this stuff.
Mechanic in a bottle to the resque.. This stuff works. Dam your car is clean, looks good. http://www.lucasoil.com/products/dis...tid=9&loc=show
